Bedroom Checklist For Back To School

The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.”
– B.B. King
Curiosity, self reliance and happiness are life long pursuits that will help your child succeed on their journey to adulthood and the space that supports their growth is the bedroom. A child’s bedroom shapes their belief system, their personality, confidence, their relationship to you, their peers, authority figures and how well they project their ideas about success. The key is creating an ambience that supports the 3 Rs: enrichment, relaxation and results. I have shared several of these in Let Your Child’s Genius Out. I have added several more back to school bedroom tips that help your child start the school year right.

Where to begin.
Your child’s bedroom is their personal realm to imagine, sleep, study, play, entertain their friends and discover who they are. Because they spend a good portion of time here, creating a meaningful arrangement will help them feel optimistic and realize their potential. Help them go back to school the right foot with these bedroom tips that enrich their space.

What to arrange.
Where your child’s bed is placed influences their ability to wake up alert. When the bed is in “command position” it is on the opposite diagonal corner to the bedroom door with the door in clear sight. This bed arrangement offers an overall view of the space, giving them a sense of control. It encourages relaxation, feeling safe and protected.

Theme bedrooms are fun however make sure there is space under the bed. Ch’i needs to circulate. A bed on the ground conducts yin Ch’i and the potential for unexplained illness.

If the desk in the designated area for your child’s studies faces a wall, their back is to the door. This shifts their attention to what is going on behind rather than on the homework in front of them. To remedy the distraction, place a clear (not smokey) one piece framed mirror on the wall in front of their desk. They will have a sense of focus and that will spur them to pay attention to what is going on in front of them. This mirror placement also expands the space reflecting back a positive self-image. And when it’s bedtime, check that the computer is covered.

Why keep the space in front of the bed clear.
The space in front of your child’s bed represents their future. Remove tall footboards, chests, chairs, even a couch. This establishes at an early age confidence that the future is bright and promising. Keep this area clear as much as possible.

Which colors work best.
If you want your child to feel calm yet energized, light blues and greens are soothing, restful colors. Green specifically stimulates growth, health and focus. Your child can look at green for a long time and not get eye strain. Blue emits a sense of well-being. It cools down energy. If your child cannot settle down before going to bed or they are prone to feeling frustrated or angry, paint the walls soft blue or add accents in their room. Earth tones help your child’s emotions come to rest if they experience mood swings.

What to do to encourage a positive outlook.
Electronics are an inevitable part of modern living but long exposure to a young, developing brain can affect a good night’s sleep and create mental stress plus nerve damage that leads to more serious consequences. A distance of four feet reduces the effect of harmful EMF energy (electromagnetic field). If you want to be completely electronic free you can purchase a kill switch that turns off all electronic devices.

Designate a space for achievement by hanging up your child’s awards and certificates where they can easily see and enjoy them. Admire their artwork with them. Place a poster board where it will be seen upon entering the room for your child to pin their artwork, cherished posters and photos with friends from favorite events.

Sha Ch’i aka knife edges are corners and angles that point at your child when they enter the room, study at their desk or sleep in bed. The brain and body’s reaction is one of feeling criticized or in danger. A faceted crystal will soften a jutted corner of a wall and if the corner of a desk is directed at your child’s head while they sleep, soften the corner with a scarf or a plant that trails (a philodendron works well).

How to calm your child’s nervous system.
If your child has attention deficit disorder or hyperactivity disorder, the following may calm their nervous system and reduce stress.
– Tone down the light in the room.
– Use color, specifically light brown, gray, dark purple, deep red or green. Keep the colors “mild”.
– Add nine pots of plants and perform the Flower Cure (for 27 days; red envelopes requested).
– Use the sense of touch by placing an object that feels different and will be felt throughout the day. It may wake up your child’s Ch’i.
– Play mellow music continuously.
– Play gentle chanting in the background.
– Or create something that when touched will create a sound. The sound may actually calm the child.

What creates a feeling of being stuck.
Should there be a wall when entering their bedroom (from the closet jutting out) a child may feel blocked, lose confidence and situations in their life become difficult. It feels like they are working hard and seeing no results. Place a full length mirror or a mirror that covers the head to the chest of the tallest person in the house on the wall to expand the space.

Manifest A Golden Year of the Metal Rat

“Wealth is not just money, it embodies five key factors: financial wealth, relational wealth, intellectual wealth, physical wealth and spiritual wealth.”
– Tony Robbins, Motivational Guru

I receive multiple emails on Feng Shui and Chinese money bags/lucky days. While they are entertaining, they don’t hold a candle to the Feng Shui lucky customs and good fortune cures of the Chinese Lunar New Year. Celebrated for over 4,000 years, The Spring Festival is the perfect opportunity to summon your goals. January 24-25, two billion like-minded families and friends pool their goodwill and good intentions into a collective energy of newness, unity, prosperity, abundance and good fortune. The synergy becomes an avalanche of manifestation. The Year of the Metal Rat is two weeks away. Start your avalanche of golden good luck with these Feng Shui prosperity tips:

Improve the Feng Shui in your home and office.
Start with placing your bed and desk in command position. You want to see the door but not be in line of the door.. Next look at the position of your stove. Is it against the wall? If so you cannot see what is behind you and that will influence the quality of the food you eat, the amount of money you have in your bank account, how well you get along with your family and winning legal disputes. Make sure you know what is going on behind you or you will be blind sided. If you need clarification, send me an email: bette@shenmenfengshui.com

Upgrade your karma. Pay It Forward.
Abundance and charity are at the same vibration. When you perform good deeds everyday (nine is even better) it actually improves your good luck. For humanity’s sake the world needs your kindness and compassion. And the upside, well it just feels good. Whenever you receive a kind deed, pay it forward.

Act consciously. Set intention.
Renew your connection with your inner self. This is where all your inspired ideas come from. Begin with a meditation space, even if it’s a corner of a room. A daily meditation practice will help you stay present when life pulls you off course. This space will soothe your senses and nourish your soul. 2020 is a pivotal year. Meditation is the link to staying grounded through change. If you don’t have a space and want to learn how to create one, I share how to create a sacred space with lighting, sound, decor and color at “Sacred Space Is Where You Will Find Yourself Again and Again”.

Perform New Year Rituals.
In my 20 years of consulting, ritual and ceremony are equal in artistry and power to decorating with Feng Shui. Build momentum for luck to soar during the Year of the Metal Rat.

Start January 14, 2020 with “Sweep away the old”  to rid your home of last year’s energy. Imagine you’re sweeping away any illness, obstacles, bad luck, negative attitudes and emotions.

Money comes easily when a bowl of oranges is displayed in your home. The word for orange (Chengzi) sounds like gold (Jin) in the Chinese language.

Chinese Lunar New Year’s eve prepare a “lucky eight” foods dinner. Make the evening uplifting and happy; include music and play games with your children, tell jokes and laugh.

Place your knives and scissors in a drawer January 25, 2020. Schedule a hair trim or mani/pedi before Chinese New Year’s Eve “to avoid cutting the luck of the year”.

Keep your peepers open past midnight on Chinese New Year’s eve to ensure good luck will cross your threshold. The sound of sleepiness in Chinese is similar to trouble. Sleepless means no trouble in the coming year.

Bring one new item such as furniture, décor or art into your home and business to stimulate prosperity chi and to increase your sheng chi. In addition give away one item or more. This creates both physical and symbolic space for new blessings. Taoist monks execute these practices every year.

Throw away china, crockery or glassware that are broken, chipped or have hairline cracks, these augur bad luck.

Make amends with anyone with whom you’ve had a row or falling-out.

Receive a handout of these Chinese Lunar New Year customs and more when you book a consultation…

After you have played games and eaten foods that attract fame and fortune, perform BSTB ceremonies to invite bountiful blessings. Want to receive the “Three Lucky Feng Shui Secret Traditions Packet”? See below.

Carry the Golden Rat’s secret friend (talisman) the Ox
“When the Rat and the Ox come together, the joy of this encounter is enough to offset any evil that the moment may harbor.”
–HH Grandmaster Lin Yun

Carry a three dimensional Ox made of bone, boxwood or jade. The exception is if your Chinese animal protector is a Horse or Ram, then carry the Monkey and the Dragon as a pair.

Design Your Life Around Your Purpose

“Your life has purpose. Your story is important. Your dreams count. Your voice matters. You were born to make an impact.
– Author unknown

When you make a decision you’re dynamic and you are powerful (thank you Abraham Hicks). This mindset immediately creates a field that surrounds you with positive intent where everything moves in cooperation with what you’ve asked for and supports your alignment with your desires.

When you are in symmetry with your desires (this is where Feng Shui comes in) the design of your home, the arrangement of your furniture, the position of your desk, bed and stove, the alignment of Ch’i and the accents to the front door maximize the wish-fulfilling energy coming into your house. This positive Ch’i creates worlds. So you may want to consider this: envision the walls in your home, the shape of your furnishings, color and lighting in your rooms, less as physical, finite objects and more as you’re composing a directive to assemble the people, places and events you desire to experience. Consciously putting your home into order yields the good fortune (luck, money, love) that blesses you.

For my September blog I am offering a secret enhancement to design your life around your purpose. This cure is from Professor Lin’s infinite body of Feng Shui wisdom. But before I give you the secret cure, consider implementing these practices, they are 99% on the mark to help you succeed.

Professor Lin recommends that meditating daily has extraordinary benefits: it calms your mind, you develop the focus to act with discernment and it broadens your inspiration, all of which help you master your life. Allow meditation to have a place in your day to access your inner voice, your intuition, it has wise messages for you. Add journaling and chanting to encourage self-esteem and self-reliance. Include a personal mantra or Buddhist mantras to transform your inner dialogue so that you recognize what you nurture, you becomeThen this cure will be the most effective and powerful.

Place the bed, desk and stove in command position (you can see the door but not be in line of the door) because these areas are your command centers. You make more powerful yet meaningful Feng Shui adjustments when you understand how lack of command hinders your ability to stay aligned with your desires. The necessity for command position influences your sense of safety; you may experience lack of opportunity; anger and mood swings. In the case if the bed is out of command heart trouble, insomnia and illness along the midline (among other health issues) may arise. When your desk is out of command you may have an outdated perspective, unable to see both opportunity and trouble coming and experience lack of support. If you cannot see what is going on while you are at the stove, this suggests a downturn in finances, diminished good luck and heart trouble. Referred back to the 27 Bedroom Concepts for how to place your bed in command, it will apply to the desk too. If you have a question about command position I am happy to answer your inquiry. Please contact me bette@shenmenfengshui.com (I follow the Red Envelope Tradition). In Feng Shui Matters To Your Heart, I share a list of design features that affect your focus and clarity. The list can be useful when you are wanting to make a change.

Ba-gua Formation
Choose either your house or your lot, but do not mix and match them. Perform this sequence for either the house or the lot not both. It’s like saying you do not trust the cure’s effectiveness. These specific adjustments mentioned are meant to be suggestions. Please be mindful of the character and qualities of the gua you are enhancing. If you go your own way, your cure could be less effective and then you may conclude the cure does not work.

Perform this cure between the hours of 11 pm to 1 am (Zi hours) or 11 am to 1 pm (Wu hours). You will complete this cure in eight days. If you miss a day you must start over at Helpful People.

Day One
Begin with the Helpful People (Chien)Gua. It is located in the front right corner of the house or lot. Outside you can place a tall rock or a bird bath, a statue of a Buddha. Place something that has weight. Inside a photo of a travel destination you love. A mirror will expand this area with the proper intention.

Day Two
Move clockwise to Career (Kan). If you know a blessing ritual from the Black Sect Buddhist Feng Shui perform that. An image of water or an actual water feature or a photo of your ancestors or an affirmation for your career are appropriate.

Day Three
Next move to Knowledge (Gen). It is located in the front left corner of your home or lot). Hang a wind chime or place an image of a mountain or a pathway or archway. Something that leads you into contemplation.

Day Four
Continue clockwise to Family (Jen). Hang a wind chime to encourage good luck for the family. Or plant bamboo. It bends in the wind; it bows in the wind and implies having the flexible Ch’i to get along with family members. Or hang an image of bamboo in this area of your home.

Day Five
Move to the back left corner to Wealth (Hsun). It is related to Wind in the I-Ching and also the Wood element. Water is usually depicted here. Hang an image of grasses blowing in the wind. Or place a convex mirror to expand the various resources to receive money.

Day Six
Continue on to the back center of the house or lot. This is the Fame Gua (Li). It means Radiance or Clarity also Clinging (as Fire clings to whatever it is burning). A spot light here to shine the light on your reputation or a crystal to add radiance to your visibility in your community.

Day Seven
Move in a clockwise fashion to Partnership (Kun) which is in the right back corner of the house or lot. This is an Earth gua. Containers, pottery, a bench, or a wheelbarrow are appropriate. Add pink roses in the house or plant roses in the yard in this area.

Day Eight
The last enhancement. This area is the Children Gua (Dui). It is mistaken for Creativity, creativity belongs to all the guas. A white statue for the lot or place a metal statue of children playing. Something hand made by a child like a drawing would activate the Ch’i.

A home that is not a complete rectangle may have a missing area or in some cases like an L shape home, an extension. These need an adjustment before you begin the Bagua Formation cure.

Spring Into Your Dreams Feng Shui Style

“If you believe the impossible, the incredible can come true.”
– Terrance Mann, Field of Dreams

Are you as excited as I am about the arrival of April? Tulips, daffodils and sweet smelling hyacinths sprinkle the neighborhood flower beds, their resplendent glory bookmark this miraculous season called Spring. Their life force a harbinger that we benefit from the many pleasures Spring delivers when we bring the outside into our homes.

Feeling the urgency to make something happen? Spring is persistent. It pushes forward. It encourages our psyche to tap into our best self, to reclaim our vitality and to pioneer our aspirations. Its uprising force bolsters our enthusiasm, pressing us to believe we can do it all. If this is you and you’re ready for change, I think you’ll welcome the high vibration adjustments that replenish your career; grow a family member back to good health; plant seeds for a lasting relationship and help you bloom during difficult times so you can remain focused on realizing your field of dreams.

Boost Your health
Where do you go to make an impression on your immune system? The front door! The front door represents the entire household: your career, your future, your reputation, your head but also your health. Place nine potted plants on the inside of the front door to improve the health of a family member who is dealing with cancer or an illness.

Squash the Back Fence Talk
Popular plants for the front entry and walkways are New Zealand flax. Flax are spiky plants and spiky plants in the Feng Shui metaphor may invite scoundrels or people who are jealous of you and gossip about you. It may also indicate that the inhabitants will become distant, their energy becomes withdrawn, isolated, and “strange”. Use flowering and non flowering plants with round ovate leaves to remove the temptation that could destroy your reputation.

Banish Pandora’s Box
Place a large vase with a cut cherry blossom branch in the foyer or a dining room side table or living room coffee table. For in the Chinese metaphor the blossom represents beauty, courtesy and modesty. The fruit itself symbolizes immortality. And it is believed that cherrywood keeps evil spirits away. In ancient times cherry wood statues stood guard in front of aristocrats homes.

Pour Your Heart into Others
If you are a coach, a mentor or wish to teach, place an image of a plum tree in your home in most any area of the house. But if you want to share your wisdom effectively place it in the Knowledge gua. Here it will foster the qualities of a charismatic teacher and student relationship. The metaphor of plum means students everywhere (around the world).

Start Love on the Right Foot
Before you seriously seek a love relationship look around your bedroom. Is your bed in the right place? What color are your sheets and bed cover? What images have you hung on the walls? The peach is associated with luck, long life and the divine fruit of the gods. The Chinese believe it can make people perpetually young. The peach petals create an intense trance of love. The peach tree represents longevity and the peach wood wards off evil. As you begin your search place peach blossom petals in a bowl in the Relationship gua of your bedroom. Once you have found your beloved remove the petals (for you might attract another suitor) and replace them with an image of a peach tree to create a long lasting relationship. When you are certain of your partner take the image down and either plant a pear tree in your back yard or hang an image of a pear tree in your Relationship gua. The sound of pear in the Chinese language is the same as sharing.

Stage a New Chapter in Your Career
Your office desk and chair are the seat of your power. Whether at home or at work if you sit too close to the door your voice will not be heard. In other words, your boss and colleagues will dismiss what you say and treat you as an underling. Or if the side of your desk is facing the door, you may experience a headache on one side of your head. Both distract you from moving forward in your career. If you cannot move the desk, place a lush plant between you and the door to protect your Ch’i.

Bloom During Difficult Times
The persimmon fruit in the Chinese language sounds like “booming market”. Plant it as an adjustment for your business to prosper. If you cannot find a persimmon tree as a cure for wealth and prosperity or it does not grow well in your area, you can use an orange tree instead. And if you cannot plant a persimmon or an orange tree because you do not have property, a small orange tree in a pot will work. Find the Wealth gua on your lot or in your home, that is a good place for the orange tree.

Men Like Feng Shui Too!

“It’s not just a girl thing, men like Feng Shui too!”
– Bette Steflik

Delivering this opening remark at a networking event brought a chuckle to the room. There is a myth that Feng Shui is a girl thing yet in my 18 years of consulting nearly as many men as women have hired me for a consultation. They are equally savvy when it comes to improving their real estate. Here’s the rest of the story, I hope you like it too.

Gary’s home could have been set into the fairytale ‘the house that Jack built’. The building looked like it was constructed on a whim, rather like a design with Alice in mind after emerging from the rabbit hole. Though it had adorable idiosyncrasies that worked for my client, Gary was wise to get Feng Shui advice to tame its wild parts.

Not long after we began, his wife joined us. She politely listened while he asked questions, learned Feng Shui lingo and took notes. When we finished she gave him a big appreciative kiss. She said it was the best birthday gift ever! I give him credit for summoning the courage to forge into unfamiliar territory and find out how those pesky details were causing his marriage trouble.

Since that day I’ve met many Garys who want to nurture their relationship. I have selected eight not-so-common Feng Shui design features that I have seen cause a partnership to grow apart. Correcting invisible elements in the home that cause conflict frees partners to experience unlimited potential with each other.

A tall building or tall house may handicap the Ch’i of a smaller house adjacent to it. The personal development of the residents may be suppressed. Partners particularly may find their issues never are not resolved due to an absence of compassion and wisdom.
Correction: one adjustment is to install a convex mirror on the side of the house facing the taller building. It turns the taller building’s image upside down, divesting it of its power.

A lot with uneven sides may bring good luck and fortune to only one partner. When you stand on the lot and look out to the street, the right side is the female side and the left is the male side. If the female side is shorter, all the females in the family may be skimmed of their fair share and vice versa. If it’s the male side, the males may suffer setbacks. An imbalance like this can ravage a relationship. A wife may develop a more successful career and her husband may feel threatened. A wife may fall into despair as her husband becomes more successful and busy and is constantly away from home.
Correction: one adjustment is to install a light in the short corner which shines to the highest point of the house.

A house missing the Partnership gua. Correction: one adjustment is to paint the color of the gua on the wall adjacent to the missing piece. This can push the wall out to give back the missing piece.

If you or your partner work most of the time. Check to see if the home office is in Partnership. If you spend long hours working, it can destroy your relationship.
Correction: one adjustment is to place a picture of the partner who does not work excessively into the partner’s office in the Partnership gua. They may then be reminded how much they love their partner and they may want to spend time with their partner. Also hang a mirror to pull the office into another position in the house.

An Empty door is a door enclosure without an actual door. The door is symbolic of the voice of the adult, an Empty door can mean a lack of communication. In Partnership, partners may not be able to share their feelings of love, regard, displeasure, doubt, eagerness and need. Good communication is often is the top attribute to a successful partnership.
Correction: one adjustment is to hang a door, if not possible hang a wind chime or crystal from the ceiling at the entry of the Empty door.

A Master Bedroom on a slanted wall suggests unexpected events for the occupants. Partners may experience an unexpected tragedy which may dissolve their relationship.
Correction: one adjustment is to hang a crystal ball on the inside of the door.

A bed on the edge of a “cleaver shaped room” suggests partners may speak with cutting and sharp words.
Correction: one adjustment is to install a mirror on the appropriate wall to “complete” the shape; the “cleaver” becomes a rectangle.

A bed in command to the bedroom door (or make the adjustment), you and your partner will face the world from a place of stability and power.

Feng Shui Cures To Recalibrate After The Storm

“You have no silver linings without a cloud.”
– Angela Carter

Harvey’s devastating blow to Houston. Irma’s ferocious pounding upon the islands and Florida, raging fires in the west have left us feeling vulnerable, toppled and tested by the forces of Nature. Now we are being asked to further tap into our reserves, pull up our sleeves to clear the debris and pull out our handkerchiefs to wipe away our children’s tears.

But there is a silver lining after a storm – resilience. But it takes time, time to pause, reflect and to feel into what to do next.

I have a Feng Shui bag with a deep pocket for times like these. It empowers the spirit and smooths the Ch’i. It contains Feng Shui cures–rituals–that support your psyche, restores your faith and reawakens your confidence. For performing ceremony or placing a cure is the pause between action and non-action. It creates a focal point to help you tap into your reserve and recalibrate your energy, enabling you to stand on solid ground again.

Adjust your home.
Invite Auspicious Ch’i.
If the front door is rarely opened, the Ch’i of the house will be unhealthy. This is the point of entry for human Ch’i, wealth Ch’i, health Ch’i, spiritual Ch’i and all types of Ch’i. Let the auspicious Ch’i flow in. If you do not open the door but enter through the garage, for 27 consecutive days, nine times a day, open the front door. You are reawakening the Ch’i.

Take Command.
Place the master bed in the command position. If the bed is not in command of the bedroom door there may be a sense of danger, lack of opportunity, anger, mood swings, anxiety, headaches, restless sleep and heart trouble.

Calm your mind.
Begin the healing by activating the center of the bedroom or the center of the house. Hang a 40mm or 50mm faceted crystal from the ceiling in the center of the room.

Adjust Your Ch’i
Exhaustion. Gather Energy. Beat the Heavenly Drum
Rub your hands together with sincerity nine times, creating warmth in your palms. Cover your ears with your palms. Your fingers will meet at the back of your head (at the occiput, the ridge). Put your forefinger on the top of your middle finger on each hand and slide the the forefinger quickly down onto the head. It creates a thump or snap (like beating a drum). Repeat eight more times for a total of nine time. This exercise may give you more mental alertness.

Panic Attack. Release Agitation. Inhale Exhale Breathing Exercise
(red envelopes requested)

Insomnia. Transform The Inner Dialogue. Tapping The Head
In those times when you cannot catch your breath, your heart is racing or you have trouble sleeping. Use all ten fingers and tap on the head, 108 times. You can begin at the forehead and go to the base of the neck or visa versa. If your worry persists, you can tap 324 times (three sets of 108 times). It draws restricted Ch’i from your inner brain cavity to the outer skull and out to atmosphere to be released.

Worry. Invite The Aid of Helpful People.
Reduce worry in your life by adjusting the Helpful People in corner of your lot, or home or bedroom. Benefactors and mentors are ‘those who make life easier’.

Not Thinking Clearly. Cultivate Clarity.
At the front door wire the electrical so automatically a bright light comes on or a clear sound is heard.

Making time to pause the Ch’i will rise to meet you. The strength of this yin yang relationship creates the space for rock solid stability and ample mental acuity to deal with your past and confidently envision the direction your life is meant to go.
