April 7 New Moon I Dance With Dragon

With money, a dragon; without money, a worm.”
– an old Chinese expression
(Those in the West want to slay the dragon; in Hong Kong, they want to be the dragon.)

As far back as 3000 BC, the Dragon has been revered and considered the most sacred of all animals. Dragons are regarded as descending from the Heaven realm. They are divine beasts of intense power, a Supreme Being amongst all creatures. It has the ability to live in the seas, fly up the heavens and lay coiled upon the land in the form of mountains. Being a divine, mythical animal, the Dragon, can ward off wandering evil spirits, protect the innocent and bestow safety to all that hold his emblem. The Chinese Dragon is looked upon as the ultimate symbol of Good Fortune. It represents fertility, immortality, happiness, power and wealth.

Why be the dragon? Richard Bang’s Huffington Post article expressed that by acknowledging dragon’s fine power and firing it up, prosperity will surely find its way into your life and a larger goodness will prevail; a higher virtue will emerge and balance will permeate all your transactions. You will make a difference in yourself and with those with whom you come in contact with. The new moon is the best time to manifest (but you can cultivate the energy any time during the month). April 7  un-tap this divine beast within you and dance its truth.

Puzzled over how to attain prosperity? Start with these three highly regarded Feng Shui cures. 1) Deer is deeply connected to prosperity and often replaced the God of Prosperity in ancient Chinese paintings and images because the words for deer and prosperity sound identical. An image of one hundred deer represent ‘prosperity one hundred times over.’ A simpler option is to display a painting or sculpture of a deer in your home or office and visualize the qualities of status, honor and advancement. 2) Create an arrangement of peonies on your dining room table. This esteemed flower is a symbol of prosperity and nobility. It represents wealth, rank and honor. Yellow and purple varieties are the most desirable. Hang either an image of a peony in a vase or place an actual peony (it may be silk) in a vase in the living room of your home. Either one expresses the wish for ‘prosperity and peace’, because the vase is a rebus for peace. 3) Hat-shaped gold and silver ingots are a popular prosperity cure. Place them at your front entry or in another highly visible area of your home. These were used as money in ancient China. Because the word for ingots contain yuán (meaning unity and expressing the essence of family which is esteemed in the Chinese culture), a picture of three ingots creates a rebus for ‘the three yuans,’ making it a symbol of status and honor.

February 7 New Moon I Tiger Burning Bright

“You must take life the way it comes at you and make the best of it.”
Life of Pi

February 7 new moon, the Chinese Lunar New Year and the entrée of Tiger month birthed a new year. Chinese New Year customs were originally dispersed via folkloric oral tradition from father to child, grandparent to daughter and so it is that great lessons are learned from parables and tales. This month Tiger teaches profound lessons. We delve into the watery depths like Yann Martel’s Life of Pi. Castaways on a vast mysterious ocean, this spiritual parable demonstrates that life is transcendent when you are on a boat with a tiger. Richard Parker (Bengal Tiger) and Pi form one of the most intensely profound “friendships” ever penned. One that would influence Pi for the rest of his life. “Richard Parker has stayed with me. I have never forgotten him. Dare I say I miss him? I do. I miss him. I see him in my dreams. They are nightmares mostly but nightmares tinged with love. Such is the strangeness of the human heart.”

With such intensity for living this is often where Tiger finds itself, on an extraordinary adventure. And true to Tigers’s character, the Life of Pi sea odyssey speaks to Tiger’s passion, their love of adventure and their addiction to excitement. Fearless and courageous they will stand up for what they believe in to the bitter end. A cat whose home is the jungle, where they must be keen and sure to stay alive, glides through the shadows with full Yin Yang embodiment: “tigers are tempestuous yet calm, warm hearted yet fearless, courageous in the face of danger yet yielding and soft in mysterious and unexpected places.” Rarely at a disadvantage this Monkey year is an exception. Tiger position is in the most ”direct conflict relationship” to the Year God, the Monkey. Tiger’s odyssey will be colored by worry and mental and physical exhaustion. Their lesson from this: to exercise harmony even when bad luck comes in waves; to be forgiving; to let go and to live in peace by performing good deeds.

Discover what odyssey winds around your Chinese Zodiac animal in the Month of the Tiger. Rat: this Tiger month reveals hidden worries. Expect as much misfortune as auspiciousness. Counter act any bad luck by attending a wedding, something happy to lift your Ch’i. Ox: endeavors will be smooth and you can expect wealth and happiness to surround you. Pay attention to mistakes in pressing affairs they may likely show up unexpectedly again. Rabbit: success is yours with celebration, money, enhancing family name and marital relationships. However beware of your speech, do not boost. Dragon: you can expect an influx of wealth and happiness. Seize any opportunity or chance for further achievement. Snake: a most confrontational month. Beware of bloodshed, traffic accidents and be mindful of safety when you travel. If you decide to take a trip perform “Walking on Six Feet of Red Cloth” cure to ensure your safety. Horse: you are in a Three Harmony luck. Career will go well and financial luck will be strong. There will be helpful people and those with malicious intent be aware of the ones who have designed schemes. Take time to be with family and celebrate to alleviate any tension during the month. Ram: you will experience good fortune but Ram is in the “mouth of the Tiger” so take precautions and avoid being manipulated or cheated by others. Monkey: you are enjoying better luck this month but under the surface you are suffering from grievances. Be advised to seize opportunities and set new records at work. Watch your health and do not visit homes of the bereaved. Rooster: family reunions during the Chinese Lunar New Year bring peace and happiness. January 9 New Moon I Holy Cow!

“We rise by lifting others.”
–Robert Ingorsoll

Will this new moon bring a horns of a dilemma or a precautionary tail?  The last month before Chinese Lunar New Year is referred to as the “tail end of the year”. For the next 28 days take time to be aware. Take a sniff, look about and when the coast is clear, tread softly and lend an ear. A kind word can curb that cute curly Ram tail from sending you high flying.

Ox loves to help. The beautiful bovine is steady, practical, perseveres and has great strength, qualities that serve us in meeting life’s challenges. With the post holiday stress it is the perfect time to take account of how you feel. But it requires that you slow down. One way is to fit a few moments of exercise into your lifestyle. Not as a resolution but an opportunity to listen to your body. Go for something different: a yoga program, walking the neighbor’s dog, swimming at the community pool….The social time and the good it does for your body and spirit enliven your Ch’i. Choose something that energizes you and you enjoy and most of all invite a friend to join you. The mantra, “I am committed to my well being.” can also read, ”I am committed to my friend’s well being too.”

A bit of divine guidance can bring fruitful results. Here are soundbites for you in the Month of the Ox. Rat: the Heavens are watching. If you working diligently, Helpful People will come to your aide. “Once you have gathered a favorable time, an advantageous locality and the support of the people involved, prosperity will come to you.” Ox: it’s a mixed bag. Some good luck, some not so good. Watch your spending and financial loss. At work avoid getting into fights. Perform a good deed each day to turn events in your favor. Tiger: celebrations and worries. Good luck and bad. Your career is going well but take precaution against exhaustion. You may find friends and family turn against you. Meet it head on and resolve the matter. Rabbit: big emotional ups and downs but if you chant the Heart Calming Mantra, Gate Gate Para Gate, Para Sam Gate Bodhi Swaha, nine times, you will have the clarity to be objective and come to a resolution. Perform good deeds to help you get past any adversity. Dragon: a month to be flexible and open minded but know to quit when you are ahead. Avoid talking about others and listening to rumors. Snake: a Three Harmony month! Bad luck turns good and your spirits are lifted. If you want to win an argument use tolerance and appeal to the other person’s senses. Don’t visit funerals or grave sites. Horse: you luck has gone south. Work through issues in a low profile and diligent manner. Focus on family harmony, arguments may bring you bad luck. Ram: a month of “Direct Conflict”. Beware of financial loss and traffic accidents. Do not take risks with investments that appear precarious. Monkey: overall you are lucky and everything goes well. Help others gladly, perform a good deed daily to accumulate virtue and increase your merits. Rooster: a Three Harmony month! Everything should run smoothly. Prosperity is yours. Listen to experts for advice, especially in the case of your career. And help out with the health of a family member. Dog: a ”Mutually Offensive” month. Take time for self reflection and correct your mistakes. Blaming others is like spitting in the wind, it comes back to you. Pig: though you receive a lot of money this month be aware of unknown disasters.

October 12 New Moon. Man’s Best Friend.

There is no instinct like that of the heart.
– Lord Byron

Man’s best friend is believed to be an auspicious animal by the Chinese. If a dog has shown up at your doorstep it symbolizes that fortune is not far off. Dog is fearless, they “eat up” the difficulties in daily life. This noble characteristic allows them to create harmonious relationships with others. Just one of their heart-warming (loyal, responsible, clever and courageous) traits that draws people to them.

This month dear Dog will be challenged with obstacles by the year god, Ram. Because you are clever your best maneuver will be to watch and listen. If Dog is your animal protector you will sharpen your instinct and get the most out of every situation by practicing patience. Love, family life and money issues are favored right now so focus there. Career choices may not be simple nor easy but the best move is to heel and opportunities will find their way to you. If you are faced with an obstacle do not use force. Act calmly and put first things first. Best advice for man’s best friend: “In every situation, people born in the year of the Dog will gain from listening to more experienced people. An enlightened intelligence and a sharp intuition will allow them to, not only feel danger from a distance and avoid it, but also discover and obtain what is good.”

But the best advice is to plan ahead and save for a rainy day. That is the Yin-Yang balance of life. Rabbit: it is an auspicious month! Finances are on the upswing; expect more romantic evenings with your sweetie. Stay focused and be discerning, you will be in a better position to capture opportunities. Dragon: luck will be blocked. Losing some money may help avert an even bigger disaster. The stars may not be on your side when it comes to driving so pay close attention while in traffic. Perform a good deed a day to counteract any inauspicious events. Snake: foreign business opportunities are quite possible as helpful people will be there to support you. Be careful when signing agreements. Horse: fortune and happiness are readily available. Be careful not to spend beyond your means. August 14 New Moon. Ghost Month and Monkeys.

Some traditional Chinese beliefs can be scarier than the Flying Monkeys but if you perform the rituals of this Buddhist/Taoist tradition that honor the spirits, be rest assured you will ghost-proof your life (and improve your luck) during the 7th lunar month aka the Ghost Month.

Dish up good food to keep the spirits happy.
On the first day of the 7th Lunar month, King Yama (the King of Hell) opens the gates letting all the spirits and ghosts ascend from the lower realm. The dead are welcomed into the family home and shrines are decorated with candles, incense, food and red paper lanterns. The spirits are given sumptuous meals to eat, a chair to rest upon, old photographs to admire, burned josh paper or hell bank notes to take with them while incense (stands for prosperity in the Chinese culture) and prayers bless the time spent together. Giving the ghost these necessities they believe will enable them to live comfortably when they go back their own world. Josh paper is burned the first lunar day outside the family residences. Families may prepare a basin of one hundred flavors and five fruits for the ghosts to feed upon with the belief that they (the ghosts) won’t do something terrible or curse them after eating their sacrifices and holding their money, only good fortune and luck will come of it.

Throw a parade for long, lost relatives.
The peak of this Buddhist and Taoist tradition is the 15th day of the Lunar month (August 28th). It is also the same time as the full moon and the fall harvest. The Chinese believe that on the days of Ghost Month and especially on the night of the full moon there is more of a bridge between the dead and the living, so they must take precautions or honor the dead. Chung-Yuan, the Chinese Ghost Festival, is celebrated with a parade and decorated lanterns that ride atop decorated floats. The procession finds its way to a river, pond or lake. The lanterns are lit and released. This is meant to give direction to lost souls and help ghosts and deities find their way to the food offerings.

Safety first. 8 taboos to scare the ghosts away.
A few thousand year old rules to stay safe this month.

  • Avoid wandering alone at night nor near a wall. Spirits stick to walls and play pranks and terrorize after sundown.
  • Forgo swimming! You won’t find someone who is Chinese dipping even their big toe in the water. Water is a medium for obtaining new victims for the ghosts to rebirth.
  • Rethink moving into a new home, opening a new business or signing any contracts. Best not to get into something the ghosts can potentially ruin.
  • Forget about getting married because the marriage will have a bad ending.
  • Delay construction or remodeling where you are banging on the walls.
  • Keep your hands in your pocket when you see found money on the street; don’t even think about bringing it home.
  • Leave crying for the daytime, a weak mind gives ghosts the entrée to harm  you.
  • Stay clear of yin places like hotels (a good idea to change your travel plans right now) or cemeteries, the ghosts like to settle here.

What do the stars say about your Chinese zodiac animal in the Month of the Monkey? Here are soundbites to help you keep out of harm’s way. Rat: let the good times roll with this three harmony match. Ox: be conservative and cautious while driving. It is a good idea not to travel. Tiger: you are in direct conflict. Be careful also when traveling, instead refrain. Hare: good times and stellar results await you. Dragon: three harmony luck this month. Increased compensation and smooth progress. Snake: direct confrontation and negative spirits.
