How Feng Shui Cures Put Your Worry To Bed!

“Trust yourself. You’ve survived a lot and you’ll survive whatever is coming.”
– Robert Tew

Worry is like a thief, it steals the goodness you deserve.

If you’ve repeatedly missed out on opportunities, wake up with headaches; regularly overlooked for a promotion at work; or daily argue with your partner over money in the same location in your home, Feng Shui would say you have a worry problem initiated by your home’s design. In this blog I share five “uncommon” design features that trigger worry and catch you off guard which can lead to missing lucky breaks and failing to see favorable openings. The following scenarios reveal that what isn’t readily apparent has an influence over behavior and interactions. The power in Feng Shui design is that by changing your environment, you alter your circumstances which allows you to bank on the good fortune that will flow into your life.

A knife edge at the front door.
A design feature I see frequently at the front entry is a corner that faces you as you enter into your home. In the Chinese language it is known as “sha ch’i”. This corner creates a knife edge and it can metaphorically cut you with headaches, distress, feeling at loss and low self esteem. If you are being criticized or learn that someone is backstabbing you, look for “sha ch’i” behind you or to your side while you work at your desk. In both of these circumstances your brain only knows there is danger directed at it. The amygdala’s job is to keep you safe, it sets up signals to get your attention in the form of anxiety. Not attending to the perceived danger creates prolonged stress in your body and an auto immune illness may likely ensue. Soften the knife edge with a string of faux pearls hung from the ceiling in increments of nine (depending on the height of your walls) or hang a 50 mm faceted crystal on a red cord in increments of nine. See the edge blunted by the light of the crystal or softened by the flow of the pearls.

Seeing a kitchen from the front door.
Whatever room you see when you enter the house influences your Ch’i and behavior. One client saw her bedroom and would take afternoon naps instead of walking to manage her weight. A game room would entice you to play video games or over indulge in media, maybe for hours neglecting important responsibilities like preparing dinner or late to pick up your children. Seeing the kitchen would be especially difficult for a person who struggles with an eating disorder or has issues with irritable bowel syndrome or any number of digestive issues. Worry that neighbors and friends might find out, they may obsess, feeling they would be judged which can lead to self deprecating thoughts and behavior.

Wealth gua missing with a “run through kitchen”.
This combo pertains to partners who worry and argue over finances. If the good Wealth gua is missing the couple may feel blocked, unsupported and carry on nightly heated discussions over finances. A “run through kitchen” is a design feature where the stove is situated between two doors that are directly aligned (in the kitchen). In this situation worry undermines trust and stability erodes between partners. Hang from the ceiling a 50 mm faceted crystals or a wind chime strung with a red cord anywhere between the two doors. Visualize the sharp Ch’i running between the two doors softens and dissipates. Compatibility and trust reawaken between the partners.

Sleeping with the bed on the door wall.
When the bed is on the same wall as the bedroom door, the brain cannot see who is coming through the door, it cannot protect you from threats of any kind. Your mind will spiral and it is a dark dance during the night of worry and angst. Over a prolonged period health issues such as insomnia, mood swings, headaches including migraines and heart trouble, e.g. arrhythmia, develop. Mental and emotional stress may accompany these and develop into more acute health issues. The adjustment is to place a mirror that reflects both the bed and the door. A beautiful fashion mirror will serve this purpose well. Off set it from the bed so it faces the door and when you awaken you can see who or what (your precious pets) is walking through the door.

Desk is out of command position.
Most desks are placed up against a wall to save space. If you work off site, your home office is generally designated as a multi-purpose room. This position of the desk is referred to as “out of command”. If a person walks through the door their unannounced appearance will startle you and the distraction initiates an imbalance within the brain. It may take up to an hour to calm your mind and return your focus and concentration to your task. During that recovery period precious time is lost that could have been used to develop a new idea or organize your work space. If it happened once it could happen again. Worry becomes a flurry of disorganized thoughts based on fear and anxiety. According to Professor Lin lack of command at the desk creates:
A sense of danger
An inability to see both opportunity and trouble coming
A narrow point of view
An outdated perspective
An old self-image
A lack of control in the world
A lack of support and good advice
Heart trouble
Being accident prone
If the desk must remain in the current position place a mirror (the size should be the length of the desk and as tall as the tallest person who sits in the desk chair). Seeing your image relaxes the brain, worry takes a holiday and you immerse yourself into finishing your projects.

Feng Shui! Build A Foundation For Joy!

“You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.”
– Maya Angelou

As long as you live you’ll never stop dreaming. So when you realize your home is the foundation for your joy it becomes fertile ground upon which your imagination can create your dream career, your dream partner, your dream vacation or whatever you are dreaming in right now. In BSTB Feng Shui it begins with the Bagua (Template of Life). It’s the most complete guide to revitalizing a home and activating one’s dreams. If you were to craft a room with color, texture, sound or smell or a combination of these using the Feng Shui principles of design and intention, you would find it invokes your imagination. As your home becomes harmonized you are stimulated by an awakening to possibilities; you harmonize with what you desire and this broadens the spectrum of what you can foresee and magnetize.

“The more detail and clarity you bring to your dreams, the more you will be able to attract what you want.” The form and intent of the Bagua is that it is a platform upon which you create something new, to accelerate your aliveness, growth and realize your purpose. As you activate creativity in one or each gua you tap into the energy of abundance and from that frequency you manifest.

My offering this month is imagine, create, design then receive your dreams and more!

Cure: Hang a round mirror to remind you to be true to yourself and remember your bliss lies within.

Center
The center represents the Eight Trigrams and the Ten Directions. It covers the ten thousand things. When your life is in transition and you cannot quite grab ahold of your destiny, make an adjustment here to set things straight. The shape of the Chinese coin represents Heaven and Earth, Yin and Yang, The Tao of Creation. Place one here to hold the center together.

The Thanksgiving Gift

“May you experience each day as a sacred gift woven around the heart of wonder.”
– John O’Donahue

We’ve been through more than we knew we could handle and though the struggle has been challenging, I believe we have been given this year to birth something new in each one of us. I admire your courage to overcome the obstacles that came your way and your fortitude to grow in love. The signs tell us we are coming into a state of grace and it begins with the Thanksgiving gift.

Wealth is a reflection of good-heartedness, trust in the future and generosity. Here is my Thanksgiving gift to you as “something beautiful to hold in your heart to survive difficult times and enjoy good times.”

The Three Harmony
If a house is square or rectangle and there are  no extensions you can magnify this shape with the Three Harmony. It’s a method from Professor Lin to create auspicious extensions in your home. If you wish to improve your career, go to the Career gua (middle front) and place a mirror. Visualize a projection and in your visualization, the mirror becomes an auspicious extension. You may stop here OR enhance the mirror placement in Career, by placing a mirror in Wealth (far back left) and one in Partnership (far back right). These guas harmonize with Career and this adjustment is The Three Harmony of Water (water is the element of the Career gua). Complete with the Reinforce with each adjustment with your body, mind and speech.

Three Harmony of Water - Career, Wealth and Relationship. Add mirrors to each sector (guas) of the home. Shen Men Feng Shui, Portland, Oregon

Feng Shui. More Than A Leap of Faith.

“Sometimes your only available transportation is a leap of faith.”
–Margaret Shepard

This lunar month is the perfect time to take a leap of faith and rewrite your story. Cast aside all resistance and invite your imagination to leap into what makes you happy. Tell yourself at the May 22 new moon you will take the leap of faith and receive that raise (add a bright light to the front door and clear the entry of clutter); buy your dream home (no toilet in the center nor stairs out the front door); meet your beloved (change your hairstyle often)… Anything you’ve been longing for is possible to manifest. Because according to the Chinese lunar calendar every three years there is a small Leap year and every five a big Leap year. Due to the exceptional characteristics of this year, regardless of the Zodiac animal, the luck is likely to be favorable this lunar month. In fact the luck is breaking records for everyone. It’s a good time to get married (ask me for auspicious dates); relocate (there’s a divination we could do); start a new business (timing is everything); purchase real estate (I would be delighted to advise on the location and floor plans); make investments (enhance Knowledge/Gen gua); break ground (ceremonies create a smooth start) or start new construction (I have tips on how to minimize setbacks). There is no limit what you can do. To help you enhance your bank account and add more good luck from the stars, I am sharing “Kissing the Stone” (mythical money cure) and good luck cures to energize your Ch’i as we continue our Covid-19 journey together.

When a frog comes into your life it’s a sign of transformation and may well spark many wonderful opportunities. In ancient China the frog represented the lunar yin and the Frog spirit Ch’ing-Wa Sheng was associated with healing and good fortune in business. Tradition has it that the Chinese god of wealth, the immortal Liu Hai, kept a three-legged toad as a pet. It is a symbol for riches and often pictured with a gold coin in its mouth.

Three Legged Toad To Gather Wealth
Ch’an chi, the Money Frog
A fortune frog or money frog, is a mythical three-legged frog with red eyes and blazing nostrils. It carries a coin in its mouth and sits upon a pile of gold coins or Chinese cash with a string of coins at its feet or a crown around its head. The coin has a good fortune symbol and faces up to attract wealth and the crown or string of coins around its feet offers protection from misfortune. The coin in the mouth of the toad, specializes in calling forth wealth and it is said to be calling out to other coins. Legend says the creature emerges on the full moon to sit by the door of people with wealth and good fortune headed their way. The myth goes on to say the toad loves money and treasures.

Look for the following characteristics when buying the Lucky Money Toad:
Red eyes
Three legs
Seven star formation on its back
Five-Luck Coin of Emperor Qianlong in its mouth
Sitting upon coins or golden nuggets

You can place the Three Legged Toad either in your home or office. Either place it in the Wealth gua of the home or office, or you can place it in the Wealth gua of your office desk.
Here is the secret within the secret:
Every day during the day, place the toad facing the main door. Visualize that the toad is going out during the day to seek wealth and bring it home. Every night at night, face the toad into the home or office. Visualize that the toad is returning with lots of money. It is important to commit to this secret movement every day. Otherwise, you lose money (Professor Thomas Lin Yun). Adding a ruby (or red stone) in the middle of the ancient coin in the toad’s mouth symbolizes “kissing the stone”, a homonym for “sure profit.”

Good Luck Cures
• Change Your Ch’i Type: If you are constantly in a bad mood change this by wearing a solid color of green.

• Adjust the Effects of a Bad Experience: Carry nine round pieces of orange peel for twenty-seven days to soften the effects of a bad experience.

• Taken Advantage of: If you feel you are being taken advantage of, carry the three dimensional zodiac animals.

• Refocus Your Energy: If your luck is not good, every 9, 18 or 27 days, change some aspect of your furniture arrangement. You are changing the Ch’i using the sense of touch. Your Ch’i will be refocused and awakened.

• Continued Bad Luck: If you have completed the Feng Shui above and still encountering bad luck, perform good deeds without expecting a reward. Be sincere, you will never be disappointed.

Upgrade Your Vacation With Feng Shui

“Surely of all the wonders of the world, the horizon is the greatest.”
– Freya Stark

Is an irresistible vista calling your name? We humans have a keen curiosity for distant horizons that only mobility can satisfy. If travel is on your current agenda for business or pleasure, romance or spiritual awakening upgrade your vacation with “Think Outside the Travel Channel” Feng Shui essentials. This collection of insights will help you experience your vacation in an entire new spirit. Learn how to play with the energetic field in far away places. Discover you can smooth out a difficult situation. Develop quick tools that help you enjoy the unfamiliar. Open your heart to the profound appreciation of foreign places (at home or abroad) and find yourself abundant with opportunities to form meaningful encounters.

Set Your Intention Imagine this experience to be all it can be. 27 days before your departure meditate daily. Visualize the feelings the vacation generates – the joy, the excitement and the flow. Visualize the places you listed on your itinerary. Hold that vibration for fifteen minutes. Your subconscious will take care of the details.

Make A Favorable Start Date selection is part of Feng Shui astrology. Choosing an auspicious date is a proper part of vacation planning. When your vacation incorporates Feng Shui principles, it has a higher degree of travel success. Helpful People show up easily to aid your journey and help you find your way when you are lost. Consult a Chinese calendar or email me (bette@shenmenfengshuic.com) for general auspicious dates. I will be happy to go over this with you for red envelopes (generally nine).

Travel With The Buddha One of my favorites. Purchase a small Buddha statue, one inch is good or it can be larger or smaller. Place it in a container that holds heat such as an incense holder or a cauldron. Place this in a private area like the top of your bedroom bureau for nine days. Each day offer incense, visualize this is your “Traveling Buddha” and it will protect you when you travel and bring good luck. Let the incense burn down and allow the ashes to fall onto the Buddha. On the tenth day take out the Buddha, do not brush off the incense and carry with you. See you are protected wherever you vacation to.

Start On The Right Foot The Red Carpet ceremony is performed when departing from your home for an business appointment, wedding or trip. Create auspicious opportunities and safety by placing a six-foot red cloth over the threshold of your front door. As you step down onto the carpet (cloth) with your left foot, visualize your trip is accident free and negative energy is cleansed. Make eight steps and end with the ninth step, your left foot, stepping of the the carpet. Fold and take with you. Do not go back into the house.

Boost Your Immune System Jet lag and time change can leave you overwhelmed quickly. Color influences how you feel. Make sure you feel good. Pack a scarf or ensemble that has the five elements-black, green, red, yellow and white or the rainbow colors. When you notice an overall weariness change to this. Visualize you are receiving vitality, radiance and balance from the color combinations and they are infusing your endocrine system with vital Ch’i.

Remove Stale Energy It might old, it could be negative. Don’t take chances with who or what resided in your room even if it is five star Hilton or private B&B. If you forgot to carry orange spray or a mister made with citrus essential oils, you can also use the peels of an orange to clear stale or negative energy. Cut nine circles, rubbed them in your hands then place them under your pillow for a great night’s sleep.

Use Insight Over Anger The biggest influence maintaining an upbeat attitude and the good luck coming. If you are prone to tension and you speak before you think, step back and “Swallow Your Saliva”, nine times. First create the saliva with the tip of your tongue on the upper palate of your mouth by moving your tongue back and forth 27 times. Then swish the saliva around your gums and teeth. While doing this think whether what you have to say will cause harm. Swallow then speak. It connects all the meridians in the body. Not only will this create positive relations but strengthen your organs, in particular your stomach and spleen. Setting intention is the motivating factor to maintaining a great vacation experience. You will see heart-felt results.

Bring Home Only Good Memories and Mementos Think about what you want to gain from this experience and what you want to remember in the days ahead. Purchasing hand crafted items that depict a country, an artisan, and an experience create good karma. You are supporting the local economy and the creativity of the local craftspeople. Choose something you absolutely adore and will use.

Keepsakes are an ever-present reminder of your most fondest moments and they can also be used to reinforce the Feng Shui in your home. Here are a few suggestions. To enhance the power of Heaven and the continuous support of Helpful People gua purchase a relic or statue. If you want to amplify your wealth, shop for a gilded mirror to draw in resources or a gold container that will hold intentions and symbols of money in your Wealth corner. If you want to create good luck in your budding romance. Purchase your Chinese Zodiac animal and your partner’s too. Purchase a three dimensional animal made of jade, boxwood or bone for your Partnership gua. If you are not living together purchase two of each, one set for your home and one for theirs. Display together in your Partnership gua of the bedroom.

Relax. Be Safe. Enjoy.

Whatever Feeds Your Soul, Add Feng Shui Cures To Enhance Your Experience.

“Promise me you’ll remember, you’re braver then you believe, stronger then you seem and smarter then you think.”
– Christopher Robin to Winnie the Pooh.

Have you made a commitment to your heart? I recently did. I spent two glorious sun-filled days at the Oregon Coast but the journey didn’t begin that way. A dark sky, the crack of thunder, gale force winds and pelting rain flashed intermittently, contrasting against gentle grazing Holstein and Jersey cows that dotted rolling coastal pastures. This little storm made navigation tricky, yet it was the perfect insular hum for ruminating, if you will excuse the pun.

Weather and Life are mirrors. Sudden theatrics, torrents of expression whether rain or anger, will derail most plans. A  “perfect summer” bubble is a prime target for a dark cloud. I thought if this start is any indication of the next two days I might as well head back home. But there was no time for misgivings, I was halfway there and I was determined to feed an ache in my heart. This trip was not only about Big Blue and leisure walks, but drawing and paper and pencils and dusty doubts from years on the shelf. I blew them off and I blew off my fears. The next day my ache was mended. Like the moon that follows the sun, the jolly red ball came to play again. I indulged in a relaxed morning then tentatively made my way to a place that carries sweet but poignant memories. The same creek was making its timeless rendezvous with the ocean. A wild bunny was sunning itself on a rock, I tiptoed passed and walked to the water’s edge, set up my camp chair and inhaled the marine air. I reveled in the trees, the rocks, moss and pounding surf. I tuned out the distractions of folks searching for pebbles and shells and applied my attention on capturing the wild scene set before me. I let my heart flow and my hand followed. Grace under fire, I danced with Spirit once again.

There are no coincidences. When I settled back in to Portland I found the “Heart Mender”, a gift I received some years ago. Its message reminded me of the polarity I had witnessed on the coast, Nature’s storm and then the calm, my stress and then surrender, the words floated like a beautiful refrain: “this Heart-Mender has been specially designed to fit your hand and lighten your heart. The natural exotic wood will become more beautiful as you hold it and rub it. Allowing your worries and stress to melt away.”

We tell stories to ourselves. Some are true, some are not. But what holds veracity for both is that life is complicated and compacted with details and we become constricted from lack of mental space. Peace and joy become smothered under dust and responsibilities. If you worry and work long hours may I suggest that before summer fades, feed your soul, embrace your inner child and balance work with play. Wondering where to start? Your home can also be your Heart Mender. Beauty is an integral part of our human experience. Feng Shui cures create beauty. They support you, lighten your heart and melt your worries away. l am delighted to share with you these four Feng Shui cures that, I believe, will help you tap into your happy space.

  • The sound of a bell ease the afflictions in the heart. Hang a wind chime on the front left eave (as you face the street from the front door) of your home. Visualize a steady stream of benefactors coming to your aide to support you. Say a prayer to complete this cure and honor this sacred object.
  • When you have little money and you need a big change, purchase a Pre-Heaven Ba-gua mirror. It will get things moving. Turn it upside down; placing Earth at the top, and Heaven at the bottom. Place it over your front door. This arrangement turns heaven and earth upside down, bringing heaven to earth. Visualize and invite paradise into your life. Say a prayer to complete this cure and honor this sacred object.
  • Your esteem has a great deal of influence on how well you do in life. This is also true, even though someone may be doing well, they might express low self esteem. If you are constantly in a bad mood change this by wearing a solid color of green. When you first dress yourself in this color, say a prayer to honor this sacred message.
  • Bamboo’s symbolism means longevity. It’s durable and resilient through all the seasons. It is hollow inside so it is humble. It has been carved into a flute, its tune brings peace. It has been used as a sword, it protects. If you want to attract peaceful financial transactions hang a bamboo curtain in your wealth gua. Say a prayer to complete this cure and honor this sacred object

Whatever feeds your soul this summer, may the experience be abundant. There is nothing like the pleasure of barbecues with friends, jumping off a diving board or simply sipping cold lemonade on the front step and soaking up Vitamin D.

If you see results from these cures, a red envelope is appreciated. And when you share with friends, please acknowledge the source, Bette Steflik, Shen Men Feng Shui.
