March 8 New Moon I Don’t Get Eclipsed!

“The body heals with play, the mind heals with laughter and the spirit heals with joy.”
– Proverb

Not only does the March 8 new moon bring the sensitive, artistic, nimble, kind, lucky Rabbit but two eclipses (March 8 and March 23) with the potential to eclipse your plans. No need to make a face because lucky Rabbit brings a gift that raises awareness, the abundance of creativity. You can benefit by tapping into your own creative nature and deflect what potentially could be a stress filled month. Everyday mark a time in your calendar and dedicate that time for play. Write silly poems, doodle in your notebook, paint a picture of joy, build a beloved pet from play dough, add zest to a coloring book, think outside the box. What might appear as thumbing your nose is actually surrendering to what you cannot control. Under the gentle hand of creativity you can be delivered into the loving buoyant space of the Universe. Your right brain makes it child’s play and much easier to step back from conflict. In this pensile place you can take broader, bolder steps forward that changes your luck too.

If you feel some resistance to trying your hand at a creative masterpiece then begin by enlivening the Feng Shui in your home. Transition from winter and change your surroundings: space clear your home with orange peel; purchase a new plant to place in your office wealth gua; reorganize your closet…move 27 things in your home. February 7 New Moon I Tiger Burning Bright

“You must take life the way it comes at you and make the best of it.”
Life of Pi

February 7 new moon, the Chinese Lunar New Year and the entrée of Tiger month birthed a new year. Chinese New Year customs were originally dispersed via folkloric oral tradition from father to child, grandparent to daughter and so it is that great lessons are learned from parables and tales. This month Tiger teaches profound lessons. We delve into the watery depths like Yann Martel’s Life of Pi. Castaways on a vast mysterious ocean, this spiritual parable demonstrates that life is transcendent when you are on a boat with a tiger. Richard Parker (Bengal Tiger) and Pi form one of the most intensely profound “friendships” ever penned. One that would influence Pi for the rest of his life. “Richard Parker has stayed with me. I have never forgotten him. Dare I say I miss him? I do. I miss him. I see him in my dreams. They are nightmares mostly but nightmares tinged with love. Such is the strangeness of the human heart.”

With such intensity for living this is often where Tiger finds itself, on an extraordinary adventure. And true to Tigers’s character, the Life of Pi sea odyssey speaks to Tiger’s passion, their love of adventure and their addiction to excitement. Fearless and courageous they will stand up for what they believe in to the bitter end. A cat whose home is the jungle, where they must be keen and sure to stay alive, glides through the shadows with full Yin Yang embodiment: “tigers are tempestuous yet calm, warm hearted yet fearless, courageous in the face of danger yet yielding and soft in mysterious and unexpected places.” Rarely at a disadvantage this Monkey year is an exception. Tiger position is in the most ”direct conflict relationship” to the Year God, the Monkey. Tiger’s odyssey will be colored by worry and mental and physical exhaustion. Their lesson from this: to exercise harmony even when bad luck comes in waves; to be forgiving; to let go and to live in peace by performing good deeds.

Discover what odyssey winds around your Chinese Zodiac animal in the Month of the Tiger. Rat: this Tiger month reveals hidden worries. Expect as much misfortune as auspiciousness. Counter act any bad luck by attending a wedding, something happy to lift your Ch’i. Ox: endeavors will be smooth and you can expect wealth and happiness to surround you. Career is very positive too however be mindful of your mental and physical health. Tiger: both joy and sorrow are around. You will be aided by Helpful People on your travels. Pay attention to mistakes in pressing affairs they may likely show up unexpectedly again. Rabbit: success is yours with celebration, money, enhancing family name and marital relationships. However beware of your speech, do not boost. Dragon: you can expect an influx of wealth and happiness. Seize any opportunity or chance for further achievement. Snake: a most confrontational month. Beware of bloodshed, traffic accidents and be mindful of safety when you travel. If you decide to take a trip perform “Walking on Six Feet of Red Cloth” cure to ensure your safety. Horse: you are in a Three Harmony luck. Career will go well and financial luck will be strong. There will be helpful people and those with malicious intent be aware of the ones who have designed schemes. Take time to be with family and celebrate to alleviate any tension during the month. Ram: you will experience good fortune but Ram is in the “mouth of the Tiger” so take precautions and avoid being manipulated or cheated by others. Monkey: you are enjoying better luck this month but under the surface you are suffering from grievances. Be advised to seize opportunities and set new records at work. Watch your health and do not visit homes of the bereaved. Rooster: family reunions during the Chinese Lunar New Year bring peace and happiness. This is a busy and dynamic time where you may find you are traveling for business and pleasure. If you decide to take a trip perform “Walking on Six Feet of Red Cloth” cure to ensure your safety. Dog: luck of the month is a Three Harmony and all adversity will turn to auspiciousness. It will be a busy and dynamic time. Endeavors will be prosperous and you will have money luck. But beware of loss of personal property. Watch doors and entrances, thieves and pickpockets. Pig: lucky days! Helpful people will be at your assistance and family business will be successful. Go on trips and maintain a dynamic schedule to avert disasters brought forth on by destructive relationship of the zodiac signs. Have a great month, Zodiac friends!

January 9 New Moon I Holy Cow!

“We rise by lifting others.”
–Robert Ingorsoll

Will this new moon bring a horns of a dilemma or a precautionary tail?  The last month before Chinese Lunar New Year is referred to as the “tail end of the year”. For the next 28 days take time to be aware. Take a sniff, look about and when the coast is clear, tread softly and lend an ear. A kind word can curb that cute curly Ram tail from sending you high flying.

Ox loves to help. The beautiful bovine is steady, practical, perseveres and has great strength, qualities that serve us in meeting life’s challenges. With the post holiday stress it is the perfect time to take account of how you feel. But it requires that you slow down. One way is to fit a few moments of exercise into your lifestyle. Not as a resolution but an opportunity to listen to your body. Go for something different: a yoga program, walking the neighbor’s dog, swimming at the community pool….The social time and the good it does for your body and spirit enliven your Ch’i. Choose something that energizes you and you enjoy and most of all invite a friend to join you. The mantra, “I am committed to my well being.” can also read, ”I am committed to my friend’s well being too.”

A bit of divine guidance can bring fruitful results. Here are soundbites for you in the Month of the Ox. Rat: the Heavens are watching. If you working diligently, Helpful People will come to your aide. “Once you have gathered a favorable time, an advantageous locality and the support of the people involved, prosperity will come to you.” Ox: it’s a mixed bag. Some good luck, some not so good. Watch your spending and financial loss. At work avoid getting into fights. Perform a good deed each day to turn events in your favor. Tiger: celebrations and worries. Good luck and bad. Your career is going well but take precaution against exhaustion. You may find friends and family turn against you. Meet it head on and resolve the matter. Rabbit: big emotional ups and downs but if you chant the Heart Calming Mantra, Gate Gate Para Gate, Para Sam Gate Bodhi Swaha, nine times, you will have the clarity to be objective and come to a resolution. Perform good deeds to help you get past any adversity. Dragon: a month to be flexible and open minded but know to quit when you are ahead. Avoid talking about others and listening to rumors. Snake: a Three Harmony month! Bad luck turns good and your spirits are lifted. If you want to win an argument use tolerance and appeal to the other person’s senses. Don’t visit funerals or grave sites. Horse: you luck has gone south. Work through issues in a low profile and diligent manner. Focus on family harmony, arguments may bring you bad luck. Ram: a month of “Direct Conflict”. Beware of financial loss and traffic accidents. Do not take risks with investments that appear precarious. Monkey: overall you are lucky and everything goes well. Help others gladly, perform a good deed daily to accumulate virtue and increase your merits. Rooster: a Three Harmony month! Everything should run smoothly. Prosperity is yours. Listen to experts for advice, especially in the case of your career. And help out with the health of a family member. Dog: a ”Mutually Offensive” month. Take time for self reflection and correct your mistakes. Blaming others is like spitting in the wind, it comes back to you. Pig: though you receive a lot of money this month be aware of unknown disasters.

Chinese Lunar Year’s Eve is February 7, 2016. In my next blog I will share an opportunity for you to join in the celebrations, Zodiac Friends! May all your wishes come true!

“That’s what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, get all tangled up, just tango on.”
–Lieutenant Colonel Frank, Slade, Scent of a Woman

Dancing with the stars and the December new moon, Rat skillfully glides onto heaven’s indigo sky. Rat, the first animal of the Chinese Zodiac is associated with water, the start of life and wise souls are they. Life shows up for everyone as an occasional unexpected event or un-welcomed change but with Rat’s clever mind, quick-witted response and steady persistence, he/she can untangle a difficult situation and tango on with ease. Grounded, peaceful, social and caring, Rat is devoted to friends and family. Love runs deep and when things go sour, they can easily get their toes stepped on. November 12 New Moon. Pigmalion.

“Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.”
–George Bernard Shaw

Generous, honorable, an Epicurian when it comes to chocolate, the happy Pigs walks in with a wink and smile at November 12 new moon. Pigs are lucky animals for the Chinese. Pig is a three harmony with the Ram. In 2015 almost everything is achievable.  There will be much luck and the Pig’s career advances. Pig has a nose for style–clothing (tutus), fine foods (truffles), and furnishings (satin and silks). “Pig often over eats but they do it with good taste.” Upon meeting a Pig you might think they are too good to be true–they are careful and caring. If you are a Pig, people will feel they can trust you and you won’t let them down. You love helping others; it is a true pleasure for you. You care a great deal about your family and friends and work hard to make life agreeable for everyone. But it is he who is an unlucky fellow who has crossed you in love and business. You are highly intelligent and a perennial scholar, loving to learn and share your knowledge.

Need help discerning what direction to take? Here are monthly soundbites for your Chinese zodiac animal in the Month of the Pig. Rat: although your career is going smooth watch how much you spend your money. If you do a good deed daily you will avoid a thousand evils. Ox: stay under the radar. The less exposed you are, the fewer mistakes you make. Abundance comes when you show caution. Tiger: a Six Harmony month! Blessings and fortune rise to the sky. Harmony with family and auspicious events will show up easily. But refrain from spreading rumors or getting into a ruckus. Rabbit: you will be recognized for your work. If you visit a hospital be careful about minor illnesses. Carry nine orange peels for good luck. Dragon: go with the flow and let events develop as they will.  Try not to complain and watch household expenses. Snake: matters will come to a boil. Avoid people who mean you harm and talk behind your back. Be careful of traffic accidents. Horse: good month for salary increase and promotion. You will achieve what you wish and all will be well within the family. Ram: a “Three Harmony” month. All sadness will be dispelled. Be assertive in planning your future. Opportunities happen for those who are prepared. Monkey: it is a most confrontational month and you will be involved with lots of disputes. Do one good deed a day to dispel the bad luck. Rooster: you will enjoy good luck. Your plans will go through as you wish. Work, studies and career have the green light. It’s a Yes! month. Dog: out of misfortune comes bliss. You get a windfall. Act prudently and keep your nose to your own business. Pig: you experience both good and bad luck. Inadvertently you spoil an opportunity. Obstacles will thwart  your efforts. Stay focused on the big picture and let go of minor frustrations.

Harvest The Best In Your Life – Feng Shui Tips

“To everything there is a season and a time and purpose under Heaven.”
Ecclesiastes 3:1

Here in Portland, Oregon, the leaves are a blast of crimson and gold. The fields were harvested weeks ago and we’ve begun to set the table with hearty soups, squashes and vibrant root vegetables. Autumn reminds us to wind down. Mother earth is letting go. We pull in and stock up as the cool, crisp mornings prompt us to winter’s imminent arrival. For humans, we take into account what we have accumulated and appreciate what we’ve accomplished. The abundance of summer has been assimilated and now it is time to integrate the wisdom gained from the events over the year. Fall, the Metal element in the Five Elements, lays the space to refine your relationship to the Earth, to yourself, to your home and harvest the best in your life. Here are four tips to create a spacious, harmonized body, mind and home this Fall.

Conserve In Autumn your body wants to conserve energy. As you draw inward, you are being pulled outward by the same responsibilities as in other times of the year. Uplift your energy and harvest the best in your life by taking time to give some oxygen to your thoughts and emotions. This nurtures  your Ch’i and will place you ahead of the holiday triggers that stir up conflict. But if discord is already snooping about, create a spacious and clear mind with an orange peel bath. Cut nine circles (skin only) of one orange and wash your entire body, even your head. Make it a ritual for nine consecutive nights for good measure. The warm, fresh, sweetness of orange conveys joy and positivity, dispersing moodiness and irritability. Letting go in this positive way encourages peace of mind. This is what gives the orange its reputation as embodying “good luck”.

Clear out As the leaves fall and you are bringing out your warm, snuggly sweaters and rain wear, this is a good to time clear out unused items in your closet(s). If you find it’s not easy getting started, Professor Lin Yun shared this valuable piece of advice. “Speak to the item. Thank it for faithfully serving you.” Then say, “I appreciate you but now it is time to part ways.” By liberating the space in your closet(s) you send the message that you are in tune with the best in your life and ready for the prospects coming your way.

Clean Now that you are refreshed and have more energy, you can turn your attention to creating spaciousness in your home. You are probably familiar with spring cleaning but the shift from warm to cool temperatures encourages mold to propagate and your health is likely to be compromised. I encourage a good fall clean especially the stove the seat of our wealth and family unity. And what’s more, fall cleaning is an act of completion of the four previous seasons (winter, spring, summer and the middle season of harvest time). This could also be the perfect time to convert to green cleaning products, even make your own. Here is one recipe for an all-purpose cleaner from Rodale’s Organic Life: 9 parts water to 1 part white vinegar. I like to add rosemary essential oil to the cleaner. The plant is considered to “renew enthusiasm and bolster self-confidence.” As an herb of remembrance, it helps us not only to recall loved ones but to remember our own true path and for me, to remember to harvest the best in my life.

Consider Some folks live without a roof over the head nor sleep in a bed. Consider passing along some of your good fortune. Lend a helping hand when you see a person in need. Kindness ripples out and has a positive effect on the world.

October 12 New Moon. Man’s Best Friend.

There is no instinct like that of the heart.
– Lord Byron

Man’s best friend is believed to be an auspicious animal by the Chinese. If a dog has shown up at your doorstep it symbolizes that fortune is not far off. Dog is fearless, they “eat up” the difficulties in daily life. This noble characteristic allows them to create harmonious relationships with others. Just one of their heart-warming (loyal, responsible, clever and courageous) traits that draws people to them.

This month dear Dog will be challenged with obstacles by the year god, Ram. Because you are clever your best maneuver will be to watch and listen. If Dog is your animal protector you will sharpen your instinct and get the most out of every situation by practicing patience. Love, family life and money issues are favored right now so focus there. Career choices may not be simple nor easy but the best move is to heel and opportunities will find their way to you. If you are faced with an obstacle do not use force. Act calmly and put first things first. Best advice for man’s best friend: “In every situation, people born in the year of the Dog will gain from listening to more experienced people. An enlightened intelligence and a sharp intuition will allow them to, not only feel danger from a distance and avoid it, but also discover and obtain what is good.”

But the best advice is to plan ahead and save for a rainy day. That is the Yin-Yang balance of life. Rabbit: it is an auspicious month! Finances are on the upswing; expect more romantic evenings with your sweetie. Stay focused and be discerning, you will be in a better position to capture opportunities. Dragon: luck will be blocked. Losing some money may help avert an even bigger disaster. The stars may not be on your side when it comes to driving so pay close attention while in traffic. Perform a good deed a day to counteract any inauspicious events. Snake: foreign business opportunities are quite possible as helpful people will be there to support you. Be careful when signing agreements. Horse: fortune and happiness are readily available. Be careful not to spend beyond your means. Watch your words someone may have an ill intent and try to distort your them. If anyone close to you (including you) becomes sick, immediately seek medical help. Ram: the Ch’i is variable. September 13 New Moon. Mercury Retrograde and Rooster.

“What is unique about rooster is its ability to keep time for humans which leads the Chinese to the conclusion there is a divine spark in the rooster that makes it capable of this unique task.”
–Tian Rao

Heaven has a lot in store for us this month! September 13 new moon + solar eclipse, Mercury Retrograde, September 17, 2015  and August 27, full moon + lunar eclipse. Dig deep and plan your strategies for the fall. Review your goals. Beautify your home with a Feng Shui remodel or redecorate. If you need stability or to strengthen your boundaries add earth tones – all range of yellows, oranges and brown tones, you could even stretch it to mocha and chocolate. Take more self care opportunities, schedule a mini-retreat by getting a massage, going to a Nature park or sit in silence by water. These fruitful labors will yield an abundant harvest.

If you find the retrograde a challenge the Rooster will have your back. And here is why, from Tian Rao, the five virtues of the Rooster: “The Rooster dons a crimson cap, a mark of literary sophistication! It claws its enemies, what martial prowess! It calls to its cohorts when food is available, a creature of compassion! It fights to the death with its nemesis, what bravery! And it never fails to keep time, a trustworthy soul. What is unique about rooster is its ability to keep time for humans which leads the Chinese to the conclusion there is a divine spark in the rooster that makes it capable of this unique task.” How might your life change if you eliminated some of these characteristics? Kindness being the top of the list. Doors would open as if by magic.

Do good deeds but also find ways to equip yourself. Rabbit: you might want to plan a lot of time in bed. Conflict is likely the entire month with your sign in confrontation with Rooster. Its a time to practice diplomacy and reserve. If you must and if you can take long retreats – that’s the silver lining. Dragon: smooth sailing – career prospects will improve and financial fortune will follow accordingly. As you ascend stay focused on your path and not others’ affairs. Do good deeds daily. Snake: Three Harmony Luck! You will receive good news on all fronts. If you are in a romantic relationship, marriage is highlighted. Career prospects are outstanding so don’t sit back and wait and don’t hesitate. Horse: you will experience many gains in both fortune and happiness. Be conservative, don’t spend beyond your means. Be cautious when you speak so those who have an axe to grind cannot distort your words. If a family member gets sick, seek medical advice promptly. Ram: not so lucky this month. August 14 New Moon. Ghost Month and Monkeys.

Some traditional Chinese beliefs can be scarier than the Flying Monkeys but if you perform the rituals of this Buddhist/Taoist tradition that honor the spirits, be rest assured you will ghost-proof your life (and improve your luck) during the 7th lunar month aka the Ghost Month.

Dish up good food to keep the spirits happy.
On the first day of the 7th Lunar month, King Yama (the King of Hell) opens the gates letting all the spirits and ghosts ascend from the lower realm. The dead are welcomed into the family home and shrines are decorated with candles, incense, food and red paper lanterns. The spirits are given sumptuous meals to eat, a chair to rest upon, old photographs to admire, burned josh paper or hell bank notes to take with them while incense (stands for prosperity in the Chinese culture) and prayers bless the time spent together. Giving the ghost these necessities they believe will enable them to live comfortably when they go back their own world. Josh paper is burned the first lunar day outside the family residences. Families may prepare a basin of one hundred flavors and five fruits for the ghosts to feed upon with the belief that they (the ghosts) won’t do something terrible or curse them after eating their sacrifices and holding their money, only good fortune and luck will come of it.

Throw a parade for long, lost relatives.
The peak of this Buddhist and Taoist tradition is the 15th day of the Lunar month (August 28th). It is also the same time as the full moon and the fall harvest. The Chinese believe that on the days of Ghost Month and especially on the night of the full moon there is more of a bridge between the dead and the living, so they must take precautions or honor the dead. Chung-Yuan, the Chinese Ghost Festival, is celebrated with a parade and decorated lanterns that ride atop decorated floats. The procession finds its way to a river, pond or lake. The lanterns are lit and released. This is meant to give direction to lost souls and help ghosts and deities find their way to the food offerings.

Safety first. 8 taboos to scare the ghosts away.
A few thousand year old rules to stay safe this month.

  • Avoid wandering alone at night nor near a wall. Spirits stick to walls and play pranks and terrorize after sundown.
  • Forgo swimming! You won’t find someone who is Chinese dipping even their big toe in the water. Water is a medium for obtaining new victims for the ghosts to rebirth.
  • Rethink moving into a new home, opening a new business or signing any contracts. Best not to get into something the ghosts can potentially ruin.
  • Forget about getting married because the marriage will have a bad ending.
  • Delay construction or remodeling where you are banging on the walls.
  • Keep your hands in your pocket when you see found money on the street; don’t even think about bringing it home.
  • Leave crying for the daytime, a weak mind gives ghosts the entrée to harm  you.
  • Stay clear of yin places like hotels (a good idea to change your travel plans right now) or cemeteries, the ghosts like to settle here.

July 15 new moon. The Month of the Ram.

“I see my life as an unfolding set of opportunities to awaken.”
–Ram Dass

Ram, the day dreamer, the peace maker, the artist of the Zodiac, enjoys the rarified air of the mountain. It’s the climb they take pleasure in. Whether to the summit with deliberation or climbing to the spaciousness within they achieve the same outcome–embracing the view that offers an awakening to opportunities. The journey also allows room for the gifts that they cannot experience anywhere but on the ascent: peace in emptiness, clarity in perspective and stability in perseverance.

The Sheep person is also content to live in their imaginings. They love to go to cultural events and be a “no holds” nurturer to their loved ones. This lunar month set aside time for delicious inner musings and use these fertile moments to nurture your creative impulse. Put a trip to an art gallery on your calendar and give your mind a breath of “aesthetic air”. Take a crafts class or pull out the sewing machine and make something whimsical. Plan to do something creative or artistic to expand the spaces in your mind that get filled up with the details of life.

If your emotions are ruling your actions and life is one conflict after the next, let Ram’s gentleness influence this impulse. Think through differences and deliver your words with kindness. In other words: when an argument is brewing–focus on peace; when someone cuts in front of you–breath in peace; when a loved one says hurtful things–emit peace from your heart. Balancing opposites is always the proposed route to maintain peace in your life when the pace seems to burn up the road.

It is a month to see the benefits of perspective and perseverance in achieving your goals. When you slow down and take a long view, the appearance of life changes and you will see that results come easy without a lot of fire and smoke.

Here are what the stars are saying about your Chinese zodiac animal in the Month of the Ram. Rat: not so lucky this month. Be aware of conserving your energy. You may be giving more than you receive. Watch your romantic life, there may be conflict that turns into crisis. Ox: watch for unexpected misfortune (ouch). Keep your head up to smell the air and be on the alert with your finances and health. The potential for accidents is far greater this month. Do not hang out with friends who demean you, in fact think about letting them go. Tiger: a little good and not so good. Helpful People abound. If you have been in a long term relationship you might be finding yourself on a plane to Las Vegas. Indeed that will create happy Ch’i. Be aware of disputes at work and rumors spread by those who wish you harm. Hare: good news! Blessings, luck, promotion and marriage are all strong candidates for fulfillment this month. Do not force things to happen, allow them their own time and you will double your return. Dragon: shall we say a little intense this month? Keep your heart open, be flexible and practice patience. Young people should avoid acting on impulse to avoid confrontations with others. Snake: good news! Helpful People are coming to assist you. There may be small financial losses but these will offset a bigger disaster. Identify channels to generate wealth. Perform good deeds daily and accumulate long-term merits. Horse: lucky you! Prosperity and happiness come easily. If you are being offered a job your application will be considered among the first so seize the opportunity to advance. Your finances are steadily improving. All in all a fortunate month. Ram: luck is not on par with what you are accustom to. Watch for people cheating you. Make efforts to understand the people you associate with. Monitor your expenditures according to your income. Beware of of your  finances before you lose too much. Monkey: it’s an ordinary month. A time to prepare yourself for rainy days. Make long-term family or career plans during the month of the Ram. Rooster: a month to reflect on whether to make investments and enter into partnership. Assess these thoroughly in order to avoid financial loss. Do not quarrel or be combative. Refrain from gossiping instead go about your business and be content with yourself. Dog: stay put! Don’t be risky with investments, take to travel, start a business nor sign a contract. Consult with the best advisers you know if you must. Be cautious! Pig: life is happening around you with family members getting married and giving birth to babies. Watch your diet. You may be susceptible to stomach aches and illnesses.

H. H. “Professor” Lin would say, perform a good deed daily. This act of compassion will counteract negative energy. If you are at a loss, move your attention to helping a family member, friend, stranger, animal, the environment or cause. Reflect upon how this creates a purification for your mind. Your relationship to all things will smooth out and solutions will come easily.
