Mandarin Duck stairway is a split stairway at the front door where one set of stairs go up to the next level (generally the living room) and the other set go down to a daylight basement. This represents a paramount split dividing partners, pulling families apart, rupturing businesses and devastating everyone who lives in the house. Every situation and relationship begin to erode and start to fall apart.
• Married couples don’t see eye to eye.
• Children may struggle and experience low self-esteem.
• Finances fluctuate.
• Health can be taken for a wild ride.
• Anger, even rage can fly.
Confusion and exhaustion are direct byproducts of this design feature because they create constant fluctuation and life is experienced as constant up and down. Greeted by this feature everyday, the occupants may never come to an equitable agreement. Partners may argue and it can reach such intensity that they find no recourse except to file for a divorce. When a company is faced with this entry design, it can bring the company and all the employees to ruin. It affects all the eight guas in the house.
Mandarin Duck stairway is also known as bilevel staircases. This design is most common in mid-20th century design split level homes that gained popularity in the 50s and reached their peak in the 60s. This design feature influenced generations to come.
“Mandarin Duck stairway name comes from the Chinese custom of having a special dish – mandarin duck – at the wedding banquet. The stairway looks similar to the roasted duck at the feast” (David Daniel Kennedy, Feng Shui For Dummies).
