Men Like Feng Shui Too!

“It’s not just a girl thing, men like Feng Shui too!”
– Bette Steflik

As I delivered my opening remark for my 60 second networking moment a chuckle went around the room with a few of the men smiling to themselves. I paused, I could feel their attention become keen as they waited for my next words. In Feng Shui there is a myth that it is a girl thing yet in my 18 years of consulting nearly as many men as women have reached out for a consultation. They too understand the value of improving their real estate. Here’s the story that followed, I hope you enjoy it too.

Gary’s home could have been set into the fairytale ‘the house that Jack built’. Angles here when they should have been there, a quirky roofline and an invisible front door. The building looked like it was constructed on a whim, rather like a design with Alice in mind after emerging from the rabbit hole. Though it had adorable idiosyncrasies that worked for my client, Gary was wise to get Feng Shui advice to tame its wild parts.

Not long after we began the house tour his wife arrived. We exchanged introductions then she politely listened for two hours while he asked questions, learned Feng Shui lingo and took notes. When we finished, she walked over and gave him a big appreciative kiss. She said it was the best birthday gift ever! To appearances it might have seemed he was winning points for a better date night but what I saw was a heartwarming commitment to create a closer bond in their relationship. I had to hand it to him to step into the unknown to find out just what were those pesky features that were causing his marriage trouble.

Since that consult I’ve come into contact with many Garys who want to nurture their home along with their girlfriend, partner or spouse. I have decided to share eight not-so-ccommon Feng Shui design features that can cause a partnership to grow apart because when we consciously eliminate conflict in our space then we can experience unlimited potential with ourself and our partner.

A tall building or tall house may handicap the Ch’i of a smaller house adjacent to it. The personal development of the residents may be suppressed. Partners particularly may find their issues never are not resolved due to an absence of compassion and wisdom.
Correction: one adjustment is to install a convex mirror on the side of the house facing the taller building. It turns the taller building’s image upside down, divesting it of its power.

A lot with uneven sides may bring good luck and fortune to only one partner. When you stand on the lot and look out to the street, the right side is the female side and the left is the male side. If the female side is shorter, all the females in the family may be skimmed of their fair share and vice versa. If it’s the male side, the males may suffer setbacks. An imbalance like this can ravage a relationship. A wife may develop a more successful career and her husband may feel threatened. A wife may fall into despair as her husband becomes more successful and busy and is constantly away from home.
Correction: one adjustment is to install a light in the short corner which shines to the highest point of the house.

A house missing the Partnership gua. Correction: one adjustment is to paint the color of the gua on the wall adjacent to the missing piece. This can push the wall out to give back the missing piece.

If you or your partner work most of the time. Check to see if the home office is in Partnership. If you spend long hours working, it candestroy your relationship.
Correction: one adjustment is to place a picture of the partner who does not work excessively into the partner’s office in the Partnership gua. They may then be reminded how much they love their partner and they may want to spend time with their partnerAlso hang a mirror to pull the office into another position in the house.

An Empty door is a door enclosure without an actual door. The door is symbolic of the voice of the adult, an Empty door can mean a lack of communication. In Partnership, partners may not be able to share their feelings of love, regard, displeasure, doubt, eagerness and need. Good communication is often is the top attribute to a successful partnership.
Correction: one adjustment is to hang a door, if not possible hang a wind chime or crystal from the ceiling at the entry of the Empty door.

A Master bedroom door on a slanted wall suggests unexpected events for the occupants. Partners may experience an unexpected tragedy which may dissolve their relationship.
Correction: one adjustment is to hang a crystal ball on the inside of the door.

A bed on the edge of a “cleaver shaped room” suggests partners may speak with cutting and sharp words.
Correction: one adjustment is to install a mirror on the appropriate wall to “complete” the shape; the “cleaver” becomes a rectangle.

A bed in command to the bedroom door (or make the adjustment), you and your partner will face the world from a place of stability and power.

Feng Shui Cures To Recalibrate After The Storm

“You have no silver linings without a cloud.”
– Angela Carter

Harvey’s devastating blow to Houston, Irma’s ferocious pounding upon the islands and Florida, raging fires in the west have left us feeling vulnerable, toppled and tested by the forces of Nature. Now we are being asked to further tap into our reserves, pull up our sleeves to clear the debris and pull out our handkerchiefs to wipe away our children’s tears.

But there is a silver lining after a storm – resilience. But it takes time, time to pause, reflect and to feel into what to do next.

I have a Feng Shui bag with a deep pocket for times like these. It empowers the spirit and smooths the Ch’i. It contains Feng Shui cures–rituals–that support your psyche, restores your faith and reawakens your confidence. For performing ceremony or placing a cure is the pause between action and non-action. It creates a focal point to help you tap into your reserve and recalibrate your energy, enabling you to stand on solid ground again.

Adjust your home.
Invite Auspicious Ch’i.
If the front door is rarely opened, the Ch’i of the house will be unhealthy. This is the point of entry for human Ch’i, wealth Ch’i, health Ch’i, spiritual Ch’i and all types of Ch’i. Let the auspicious Ch’i flow in. If you do not open the door but enter through the garage, for 27 consecutive days, nine times a day, open the front door. You are reawakening the Ch’i.

Take Command.
Place the master bed in the command position. If the bed is not in command of the bedroom door there may be a sense of danger, lack of opportunity, anger, mood swings, anxiety, headaches, restless sleep and heart trouble.

Calm your mind.
Begin the healing by activating the center of the bedroom or the center of the house. Hang a 40mm or 50mm faceted crystal from the ceiling in the center of the room.

Adjust Your Ch’i
Exhaustion. Gather Energy. Beat the Heavenly Drum
Rub your hands together with sincerity nine times, creating warmth in your palms. Cover your ears with your palms. Your fingers will meet at the back of your head (at the occiput, the ridge). Put your forefinger on the top of your middle finger on each hand and slide the the forefinger quickly down onto the head. It creates a thump or snap (like beating a drum). Repeat eight more times for a total of nine time. This exercise may give you more mental alertness.

Panic Attack. Release Agitation. Inhale Exhale Breathing Exercise
(red envelopes requested)

Insomnia. Transform The Inner Dialogue. Tapping The Head
In those times when you cannot catch your breath, your heart is racing or you have trouble sleeping. Use all ten fingers and tap on the head, 108 times. You can begin at the forehead and go to the base of the neck or visa versa. If your worry persists, you can tap 324 times (three sets of 108 times). It draws restricted Ch’i from your inner brain cavity to the outer skull and out to atmosphere to be released.

Worry. Invite The Aid of Helpful People.
Reduce worry in your life by adjusting the Helpful People in corner of your lot, or home or bedroom. Benefactors and mentors are ‘those who make life easier’.

Not Thinking Clearly. Cultivate Clarity.
At the front door wire the electrical so automatically a bright light comes on or a clear sound is heard.

Making time to pause the Ch’i will rise to meet you. The strength of this yin yang relationship creates the space for rock solid stability and ample mental acuity to deal with your past and confidently envision the direction your life is meant to go.

August 21 New Moon. Ghost Month Customs To Make Any Hungry Spirit Happy.

“…what we take from the spirit world is only a reflection of what lies inside ourselves.”
– Charles de Lint

If  you thought the Great American Eclipse was an experience, gird your loins, it’s Ghost Month where restless spirits soar from Hell’s gates. Often compared to Halloween, The Hungry Ghost month is a time when family honors their ancestors. They bid their spirits welcome with colorful shrines decorated with brightly lit candles, chrysanthemums, red paper lanterns and burning incense (symbolizing prosperity). Elaborate meals are prepared, a special chair is given to the wandering ghost to rest from its weary travels and hell bank notes (burned josh paper) will be in the spirit realm. The Chinese believe these alms enable the spirits to live at peace when they return. These customs are performed with sincerity but the underlying motive is self preservation. Families believe that if they feed the ghosts, they won’t curse them and good fortune will come their way. These traditions also raise a mindfulness about looking after those who are marginalized. It is an opportunity to teach children about easing the suffering of others as it is believed some ghosts who come back have no family to visit their grave and others have died due to unfortunate events.

On the 15th night of the lunar month, Taoists and Buddhists hold, Yu Lan, the Hungry Ghost Festival. It The full moon and the fall harvest are celebrated too. The evening is filled with rituals–a parade with floats of lotus-shaped lanterns riding on top. The procession makes its way to a river, pond or lake. It is said that the lanterns give direction to lost souls plus it helps the ghosts and deities find the food offerings left for them. June 24 New Moon. Make Art Not Anxiety.

“Love of beauty is taste. The creation of beauty is art.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson

June 24 New Moon the polite, kindhearted, clever Ram enters the Zodiac stage. Sensitive, affectionate, creative with a love for beauty, the Ram is predisposed to taking good care of loved ones , creating domestic bliss and they love to make art. Epicureans of good taste, it is quite natural for a Ram to decorate their sanctuary with style and complete it with luscious comfort.

The thunderous yang energy of the Horse has rather left all of us panting and wanting to catch our breath. Ram’s calm influence can help you unwind this month in the arms of your home. Use the yin energy to irrigate your aesthetic nature and make art not anxiety. Steep yourself in your “creative vision” super power. Let it wash over all your affairs and don’t resist when your right brain percolates out-of-the box ideas. These may very well lead you to soul satisfying solutions for your career, relationships and reflective time.

Ram is connected to the season of Earth. It is the time of transition, transformation and harvesting your ideas. Will you make art this month or will you generate anxiety? Rat, you are not in accordance with the Ram. You may expect hindrances, scoundrels, illness and loss of wealth. Perform the BTB “Golden Cicada Sheds Its Shell” the first lunar day of the month to dispel bad luck and disaster. Ox: you and the Ram are in direct conflict this month. Misfortune and missed opportunities with some obstacles may trip you up. Take precaution in all your activities. Guard your wealth. Pay close attention to your health. If you are in a romantic relationship now is not the time to make any decisions. You too can benefit from performing the BTB “Golden Cicada Sheds Its Shell” the first lunar day of the month to dispel bad luck and disaster. Tiger: your fame will be on the rise and your career will climb. If you have been doing good deeds, your endeavors will show up in your prosperity and fortune will smile upon you. Take advantage of opportunities and work diligently for your future. Beware of unexpected trouble and take precaution against illness. Use your keen intuitive sense when dealing in business, there is cause to be concerned. Rabbit: this is a Three Harmony month and your luck is going well. The stars are highlighting where you work. Accept praise with graciousness. You may receive a promotion and a raise. Be assertive now in making progress and seek other opportunities. Dragon: you can expect both good luck and misfortune. Watch out for scoundrels maligning your good name. There could be arguments and disputes among relatives, friends and colleagues. In all endeavors step back to have a clearer idea of the big picture. Snake: you will enjoy success in your business but it is advised to keep a low profile. Do not give scoundrels the opportunity to do you ill favor. Horse: auspicious stars shine on you this month. There is a chance of marriage and the entire household will be blessed. You will have lots of good fortune and your investments will pay off. If you are in a government position or managerial role, good news will arrive from afar. Women will progress in their career and their reputation will rise. Stay away from spreading gossip. Ram: there are both gains and losses this month. Financially you may be taken advantage of. Emotionally you may often be distressed. Practice the BTB “Inhale Exhale Breathing Exercise”. Keep to your tasks and you will be paid off in the end. Monkey: this month everything is running smooth. There will be harmony in the family. At work, helpful people will be helping you. Know when to call it quits. Rooster: a month to observe the rules and mind the law. Don’t do anything illegal and you will have a good conscience. May 26 New Moon. Horse Sense.

“When your heart speaks, take good notes.”
– Judith Campbell

May 26 new moon the friendly, passionate Horse came to the forefront of the Chinese zodiac. With a zeal for life, those born under the Year of the Horse are warm-hearted, fervent and generous. Horse is a loyal companion and consistently there for their friends. Patient when it comes to hearing out what other people have to say, they excel at resolving conflicts, their own and most everyone else’s. Their independent nature and unwavering vitality are key characteristics that help them survive obstacles. Interestingly these traits are the bulwarks that support their rise to the top of their career.

In the Chinese zodiac Horse rules the time between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm. In Chinese medicine this time is ruled by the Heart. 2017 has posed challenges for humankind. Our collective heart is speaking. It is saying spread more love and compassion. Call on your super power, compassion. Give away your patience, your ear, your time and  your heart. In spreading good deeds, acts of compassion form a shield against arguments and tension. Negative energy cannot incubate in an atmosphere of kindness.

It is Chinese summer. The fruit is ready. What delectable harvest might you enjoy this month? Rat: you are in direct conflict with the sign of the month. Set the dial high on your radar. You may encounter unexpected lawsuits and accidents. Best advice: maintain a low profile and be conservative. Ox: you and the Horse are in the most confrontational relationship this month. Pay attention to your health. Be aware that disasters could come out of nowhere. Err on the side of caution and be conservative rather than taking big steps. Tiger: you are in the Three Harmony this month. Helpful people will be assisting you. Revel in the glow of prosperity in your wealth and career. Ride the wind, let things flow and good fortune will find you. Rabbit: luck is not good this month. You may find that matters will be difficult to navigate. Wait for better timing. Chanting the Heart Sutra mantra morning and night will help you maintain peace and a serene frame of mind. Dragon: helpful people will assist  you in attaining your goals. Not only career,  you can expect to gain profits and expand your wealth. Be mindful of partnering with zodiac signs who are not compatible with your own. Conflict will likely show up later. Snake: your luck is laser like this month. Be mindful of business relationships with new friends, you could be taken advantage of and lose money. Horse: best to see things with a philosophical perspective. Safeguard your home and household. Be cautious, be conservative, do not be careless. Think before speaking and avoid vanity and greed. Ram: the month is a six harmony month. You will have the best luck of the year. Stay the course in all your endeavors. Watch for illness and accidents. Monkey: good time for your affairs to fall into a routine. Be cautious and modest and you will avoid scoundrels. Rooster: a month to turn your gaze onto peace and tranquility. Take the high ground and do not gossip or put your nose into other folks’ affairs. Advice: chant The White Robe Kuan Yin mantra. Dog: your persistences pays off, helpful people will back you, luck is at its best. Don’t let trivial things nor petty people bother you. Take more time to relax. Pig: concentrate on your career. Changing jobs is not recommended at this time. If you become sick, seek medical attention immediately. Avoid attending to the bereaved or going to funerals. If you request a cure from this forecast, I will ask you to honor the red envelope tradition. Have a great month, Zodiac friends!

February 26 New Moon, Amazing Grace

“A wise man adapts himself to circumstances, as water, shapes itself to the vessel that contains it.”
– Chinese proverb

Beauty is the clay that the Rabbit uses to shape their vessel. Their refined social nature may take them to an afternoon at an art museum, converse with the literati at a familiar haunt or use their prodigious healing skill to attend to the needy. Wherever they are, whatever they do, grace surrounds them. One of their outstanding qualities is their keen emotional nature. It enables them to detect the climate of others which gives them an adeptness in their dealings. Rabbit has a love of decorating their home, they may peruse vintage stores looking for that one special treasure to add to the antiquity and esoterica that embellish their surroundings.

Because the sweet bunny is in the hot seat with the Year God, it brings awareness to reflection and something new this year, adaptation to whatever challenges appear. In fact, self-reflection is a super power for Rabbit. It creates space to adapt to any given situation. Think of it too as your super power when making important life-work decisions, achieving your goals or dealing with disappointment. Imagine your home inviting graceful change and then let your troubles melt away.

March the ground is thawing, the ice cracking and the noble sky is unveiling Spring messages. Resist the urge to stay in the rabbit hole. Give yourself the edge. The solar system has news you can use. Rat: a Mutually Offensive month misfortune overcomes auspiciousness. Don’t get into matches with others, refrain from disputes and stay away from gossip or you will find scoundrels in your life. Maintain calm and find your peace spot within. A month to clean up your attitudes – feeling sorry for yourself and being picky. Ox: be steady and take precaution in all your endeavors. Take to routine like a duck to water. Refrain from indulging in acting cranky and impatient. Take one step at a time and all will be sorted in the end. Money will come as you wish and health will be good. Tiger: your luck is fair this month but be aware that there will be as much joy and there is sorrow. Be conservative and keep a low profile. Do not compete with others, avoid talking behind people’s back and arguments. Rabbit: your luck will fluctuate this month. You may find that there is opposition to your will with scoundrels getting in your way. You may experience unexpected disasters and do not take money from ill-gotten gains. Dragon: this is a confrontational month. Events do not turn out as you plan and there is disharmony. Avoid entanglements with scoundrels. Eat clean foods, illness finds it way through the mouth. Snake: business and work will be favorable, however remain industrious and get along with your co-workers. Be patient with your family and friends. Take on more social activities and relax. Only then will you get rid of unhappiness. Horse: there is the yin and the yang this month. A smooth path with hurdles to cross. Matters appear to be going well and then they change direction and conflict with arguments arise. Ram: your financial luck will come easily but still remain conservative. Stability is the best strategy. Do not be greedy where others are concerned. Monkey: the luck of the month will be on even keel but there will be obstacles to surmount too. Be cautious when making investments. If there are disputes among family members look to yourself before casting blame. Find methods that calm your spirit and keep a low profile. Rooster: the month is mutually offensive and confrontational. You will find yourself blocked, there is interpersonal disharmony and marital disputes. If you are confronted be patient and tolerant with others. Remember to refrain from letting your temper explode; keep the goal of harmony in your sights. Dog: your money luck is good for investing in stocks. “However be cautious in selecting your targets for investing.” Don’t be an opportunist. Pig: with Spring is the radiance of the flowers and so is your luck. During this peace filled month it will be a good time to advance. Be objective with your judgement otherwise you may draw the wrong conclusions.

If you request a cure from this forecast, I will ask you to honor the red envelope tradition. Have a great month, Zodiac friends!

November 29 New Moon I Seize The Cheese

“Real generosity towards the future lies in giving all to the present.”
Albert Camus

November 29 new moon the legendary Rat expertly sniffs his way onto the Zodiac stage. In the number one position of the Chinese Zodiac this rodent is a nose ahead when it comes to sizing up a situation and acting on it. Very social with a charming personality, Rat is curious, imaginative, has a great wit with an amazing memory which is perhaps why he/she is the most auspicious Chinese symbol for success and wealth. Rat can see the detail within detail and their heightened awareness makes them masters at seizing opportunity. This month borrow Rat’s super powerful x-ray vision and refine your sensibilities. With your polished sixth sense you’ll have the nose of a rat to seize the cheese. Carpe diem!

Start the new moon with a little sleuthing through the Chinese astrology forecast to find your animal protector and then be prepared to seize the cheese for you and your loved ones. Rat: your health may take a turn, seek immediate medical advice. Take precaution against theft and burglary, check your entrances and doors. Money could be lost. Overall be conservative in your dealings and do not begin any construction. Ox: much celebration!!! Expect lots of wealth and joy! But be careful when selecting a partner for a joint venture, there can be disharmony. Go for what you want and take advantage of opportunities, don’t hold back. Tiger: Helpful People abound. You will find you will receive twice the reward with half the effort. If you are on a job interview or making a long term business projection this will go smooth. Expect adversities to turn into blessings. If you decide to perform good deeds the merits gained will enable wealth and fortune to flow naturally to you. But beware of scoundrels talking behind your back. Rabbit: the month shows some less favorable conditions: money loss, traffic accident – pay attention to safety wherever you go. Perform the “Driving Safely Cure”. Do not travel this month if you do not need to. Dragon: this new moon brings a Three Harmony month. Expect auspiciousness, prosperity  and joyous celebrations. Your wealth and career are flourishing as well as your family financial situation is blooming. However beware of traffic accidents. Snake: “befriend those who exert good influence  on you and you will get the assistance of Helpful People.” Don’t talk about others and do not interfere in their business. Guard against unrighteous behavior from friends and relatives. Beware of accidents and be cautious, the energy is rife for being cheated and deceived. Horse: it is a “Direct Conflict” month. Your luck this new moon and your attitude will not be the best. You will encounter difficulties both inside and outside the household. It is advised to chant the White-Robe, Kuan-Yin mantra both morning and evening to help you feel calm and stable. Ram: “it is a confrontational month and your luck will be the worst of the year” so be passive, remain low key and practice patience. Your finances will be fair but be cautious about spending more than you earn. Monkey: “the sun has come out after days of rain.” Starting this new moon all your dealings and operations will be  joyous and satisfactory. Money luck will be good! Seize the day when it comes to your career or a relationship. Rooster: it is a “Mutually Offensive month” and your luck will not be the best. Helpful People will be at your side but exert forbearance in your words and your behavior. Observe the rules and regulations and remain enterprising. “Pay attention to your diet for illness finds its way by the mouth.” Dog: the sun is shining on your luck and it is running better. Whatever you  choose to do it will be supported. If you keep the faith and act with sincerity your career will climb. However monitor your expenses with your income, you would not want to find yourself in an embarrassing situation. Pig: “it will soon be the end of a bad year however do not let your guard down, misfortune has a tendency to escalate at the end.” In short be extremely careful in all that you do at the commencement of this new moon. If you request a cure from this forecast, I will ask you to honor the red envelope tradition. Have a great month, Zodiac friends!

Take Command Of Your Sleep, Start With Feng Shui Design

“By helping us keep the world in perspective, sleep gives us a chance to refocus on the essence of who we are. And in that place of connection, it is easier for the fears and concerns of the world to drop away.”
– Arianna Huffington, The Sleep Revolution

In July I shared with you I will be part of an anthology, Recipes For Living Coloring Journal. It’s no surprise my chapter is devoted to how Feng Shui bedroom design helps you sleep better. I truly believe the bedroom is the most important room in the house. So when I read Arianna Huffington’s account of her “wake up call” in The Sleep Revolution, I knew that the benefits of Feng Shui design need to spread throughout the world.

“We are in a sleep deprivation crisis,” writes Ms. Huffington. “I experienced firsthand the high price we’re paying for cheating sleep when I collapsed from exhaustion.” She goes on to say, “If we look at our lives as a spiritual journey, sleep becomes a key paradox: when we completely identify with our persona in this world–with our job, our appearance, our bank account–we are asleep to life’s deeper dimensions….We are living in a golden age of sleep science–revealing all the ways in which sleep and dreams play a vital role in our decision making, emotional intelligence, cognitive function and creativity. And how lack of sleep is often the culprit behind anxiety, stress, depression and a myriad of health problems.” (Harmony Books, The Sleep Revolution)

Consulting with my clients I have discovered a similar loop. Usually it takes the form of an underlying anxiety that monitors their decision making where their choices are based on a stress response. For nearly everyone of them this stems from an exhaustive bedroom design.

Sleep not only helps you work efficiently but be a productive part of society. Yet productivity is but one piece of the well-being matrix. Living fully and consciously means tapping into your creativity, your rich well of emotions and you soul’s purpose.

Of all the Feng Shui design advice I give on the bedroom, I have found “placing the bed in command position” carries the most weight in addressing productivity (yang) and creativity (yin) of our everyday lives. And for those who constantly deal with anxiety, worry and depression, it is a gift for the soul. Bed placement creates a palpable shift in your emotions and I have seen a positive attitude change as a result. Choices come from confidence rather than the seat of the pants. Clarity eliminates self-sabotaging behavior that cycles into stress. Inspiration flows freely as the brain functions at its optimal capacity rather than run on auto-pilot.

If you’ve had doubts why changing your bed position is a good idea, I’ve included a short list. You may be surprised how it influences your health and peace of mind.

  • Heart troubles. Where your bed is positioned can place stress on your emotional heart. Prolonged stress can develop into physical heart troubles including a murmur and arrhythmia.
  • Illness along the midline. Your major organs from your brain to your kidneys can be affected.
  • Insomnia and restless sleep. Our brain is responsible for our survival. It we’re too close to an entrance, either facing it, to the side of it or behind it, this placement triggers the amygdala (the fight-or-flight mechanism). Our brain never shuts off and this weakens the immune system which depends on releasing toxins and building tissue in sleep.
  • Missed opportunity. If you sleep in line of the door your body never lets down at night to rejuvenate. During the day you may be preoccupied with a low grade headache which will invariably eclipse a chance meeting or being considered for promotion.
  • Mood swings. If your bed is on the door wall, you cannot see who is coming, you may feel a sense of danger and you may be blind-sided.

Command position is based on H.H. ”Professor” Lin’s Theory of Relative Positioning which states, the energy that is closest to you affects you the most. Think of the gunslinger in the old westerns. He always had his back to the wall and his eye on the saloon doors. Never too close and not in line of those swinging doors.

  • Your bedroom door determines command position.
  • The door should be within eyeshot of the bed.
  • The bed placement should allow the widest scope of vision of the door.
  • The best placement when feasible is the farther wall from the bedroom door.

As you lay in bed tonight take a moment and observe your surroundings. What do you see? What do you feel? Self awareness is key to getting a good night’s sleep.
